Joe Sacco: Paying the Land

Renowned cartoonist Joe Sacco has a new book of graphic journalism out called Paying the Land. Perhaps best known for his two books on Palestine (Palestine and Footnotes in Gaza, respectively), his new book focuses on the indigenous Dene people of North America, "resource extraction, and our debt to the natural world".
He is speaking tonight with Art Spiegelman at 7pm EST, which will be streamed by Society of Illustrators on YouTube.
The New Yorker published a preview of the book here.
And a review by the Guardian.
Dene people previously. Joe Sacco previously.

I have read and greatly enjoyed a few of Sacco's works. Anyone know why he illustrates himself in such a grotesque manner? I think grotesque is appropriate, and at the very least he deliberately embellishes certain features. There's a self-deprecation, especially in his Palestine/Occupied Territories reportage.

I'd guess it reflects his state of mind while in the field. There are often hints in his books that he feels a little out of place or intrusive when out there interviewing people who are in such difficult circumstances.

It had escaped my attention until I stumbled upon this post so thank you. Fond memories of reading previous works by Mr Sacco. Looking forward to this.
