Happy 21st birthday, Metafilter!

Cat-Scan.com is one of the strangest sites I've seen in some time. I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into their scanners, or why.

Metafilter is now old enough to legally buy cigarettes and alcohol, adopt a child, drive for Uber or Lyft, buy a gun, gamble in Vegas, rent a car, buy cannabis recreationally, apply to be a commercial pilot, be the Mayor of Montana, and get married without parental consent in Mississippi. Go have fun, kid. First drink's on me. 🍻

Is "the Mayor of Montana" an inside joke I haven't seen yet, or just a hilarious malapropism?

It's a little weird to think that I've been here over half its life, I always think of myself as a nooblar, especially when I read olden times posts and see usernames that are still active.

This is a very strange time to wander back in here. I understand why they kinda drifted to the online-only things they became (especially this year) but, man, I miss the mail-out mix CD swaps. I have so much bleak/pretty/chill/melancholy/cool/uncool/weird music I want to subject to random folks in lovingly crafted mixes with custom artwork and liner notes. Those were so much fun and I still treasure the mixes I received - needlegrrl, one of yours has been beloved by many folks in multiple households.

Here's hoping the best parts of this site continue to endure and improve while the world burns down.

I do find it incredible and often hard to believe that Metafilter, a relic of the old Internet (in so many good and bad ways), is still alive and being used. In 2004, I'd never would have thought that a site that is entirely text would still matter to people in 2020 surfing the web on their PDAs. Maybe after 16 years membership and few years of lurking I should finally make that FPP I keep putting off...

Ok blue wall of text, have the digital equivalent of an adult beverage, go a little wild tonight, maybe turn on gifs for a couple hours. But change, change all the time, some subset will always gripe but don't worry, change. Ok change for the better, they'll still gripe, but just go for it.

Given how 2020's been going, I'd certainly think long and hard about a time traveler's offer to return to those days!

I'm not an active commenter by any means, but this site has been part of my daily internet for most of those years (I certainly wasn't here day 1, but day 1000? somewhere around there I started reading, certainly well before The Mushroom Incident). The work that the folks here have done (both official moderators and unofficial) has continued to make this one of the few places on the internet where one can actually have a good conversation.

Metafilter is wonderful, still, after all these years. Even with all the coming-to-grips with our unconscious racism, transphobia, etc. Self-correction and awareness raising is a feature not a bug.

(Not to be congratulatory that we did the work, just that I know I am blind to the ways in which in I am contributing to the silencing of voices and I want to express gratitude to those who had cared enough and had the patience to address these issues when I really had no right to expect that from them. It's an honor being a part of a community where this is even remotely possible and it inspires me to want to raise the rest of the world to this standard.)

I have real friends that I have made here. Some I have met in real life, others not. Metafilter has been witness to the story of my entire adult life in which I have attempted to save the world, have kids, buy a house, deal with loss, and fix my computer and have failed miserably. It has always been a refuge where I can return and find validation, support, advice, a laugh, some honest advice -- all the things one should expect from one's family but seldom finds. I have only recently been aware that not everyone here feels fully the same and it is my sincere hope to make it possible for others to feel similarly at home and loved.

Among other things if it wasn't for Metafilter I would have missed out on dozens of meetups in three different countries. It hasn't all just been about thrashing around online.

Me too! U.S., Canada, and India. I really wish I had gotten it together to do the same when I visited London, Switzerland, Iceland, France, etc. Just recently, I had reached out to a Mefite who has been going through an extremely tough time and sent my phone number and we had a conversation a few days ago that was really meaningful to me, hopefully to them too.

I still haven't found a used car, but I did buy my sweetie a banjo, I went PC to Mac and back to PC while being Linux-curious, I made decisions about de-clawing cats and circumcising babies, I got a lawyer, I got a counselor, I talked to my doctor, I never D'ed TMFA, and I did in fact eat it, all of it. I miss things like the eighth anniversary where we did Dance Dance Revolution with Matt, who was wearing flip-flops I believe and shared a ginormous donut with Cortex and gave a giant hug to Jessamyn after figuring out the rebus under the bottle-cap (did we really drink Lucky Lager that night?).

Happy birthday, MeFi. May you always be awkward and weird.

Happy Birthday MeFi!

I've been lurking here since 2002. It's as close to perfect as possible, I think.

So many good things on the Internet got successful, were bought by large companies and destroyed. Or they morphed into strange messed up versions of themselves as they chased the almighty dollar. Every site converted their pages to do that annoying, eternal scrolling thing. Every gimmick web designers can think up got crammed into every page until you couldn't even see the content without closing three or for popups. Comments sections would make almost anyone lose any hope for humanity. Every user is monetized and tracked.

In all this time though, MetaFilter kept being its amazing self without following the trends that ruined almost everywhere else. Go to any page on the site and it's just plain text, people getting together and talking about stuff. Thoughtful moderation keeps the train on the tracks.

Thank you to everyone who keeps the site running, and thank you to everyone who comes here and contributes. I mostly lurk, but MetaFilter is one of my main homes on the Internet.

Here's to wishing MeFi another 21 excellent years! May it grow and flourish and never lose its soul.

Isn't that the truth about life in general? Whatever "process" you put in place, however you put a shiny interface on things "to make it easier", it all comes down to whether the people are involved and are putting their hearts into it.

"... it all comes down to whether the people are involved and are putting their hearts into it."

Anything worth doing is worth putting your heart into, and where you put your heart is where you're vulnerable.

MetaFilter has enriched many lives over the years and it's done so because many, many people have put their hearts into this community. Some people have probed and cut at this heart for years and have managed to — over time and then all at once — inflict some serious wounds.

If we love this place — and I do — I think we need to come together to help heal those wounds, find ways to defend MetaFilter and ourselves from attack, and to adapt and change as required by a world that is always changing around us.

Happy 21st Birthday and thanks, MetaFilter, for being a unique and wonderful site.

The kids isolated snot DNA and my job was to coax them towards using the internet to find stuff out about a given DNA sequence: where it came from, what was its function . . . At some point I asked with a rhetorical flourish
“Where would you go to find out about tropical fruit?”
“Bebo”
“Wha’?!?”
“Yes, Bebo is full of people of who know all sorts of things, I’m sure there’d be an expert on tropical fruit”

As both a celebration of this place and possibly a sad indictment of my life, metafilter has been one of my biggest constants over the past 15+ years. I've had my hiatuses but this corner of the internet is intrinsically tied in with my life and who I am as a person.

Solid innings for "that blue website you're always on" as many family, friends and colleagues over the years have pointed out.

Happy birthday to you, yours and everyone who takes part.

Happy birthday, Metafilter. I've been reading and lurking for twenty years and it's you all are still the best of the web.

Um I would totally be down for that! And I still buy actual physical CD's and would prefer that over some playlist swaps....just in case any other olds wanna start this up again too?

Anyways...happy birthday Metafilter! I found out about this place from some other site in maybe 2008 or 2009 and was immediately hooked. Lurked for quite a few years until 2013 that I finally joined to make some dumb comment. It's funny that in all the good and insightful comments I've made, the spur to pay the $5 and join was so insignificant and silly. Especially when this site has helped me to become a better person who changed from seeing things in black and white to shades of grey (or blue lol)

Metafilter is the internet to me. It's really the only place I visit anymore and the first place I go to when something big happens. I come here to get real information from real people, without the news focus of "but how many americans died?" or "but what does this mean for XX's reelection chances" or "how will this affect YY's approval ratings" horseshit. When it's been a slow week at work and I've run out of stuff to read on here, I dont know what else to even do. I love this place and I love all y'all.

tanti auguri, mefi - I took the plunge to sleuth a creepy ad well over a decade ago, and have enjoyed unquantifiable amounts of popcorn and gifted wisdom since then, so: thanks, and may this motley grove/thicket prove resilient for many more eras.

This makes me slightly sad, not at the length or amount of time I've spent on the site, but that I can't wedge myself into my MeFi tee any longer.

Happy Bday.

That's not cat-years, right?

21 years ago I was an old fart. 42 years ago I had crossed the line. Over 30. Holy crap. Thanks for reminding me.

Happy 21st Metafilter! It's always a little scary when I see the Cat-Scan post.....honestly it freaks me out how quickly the years are zipping by. I lurked for a few years before joining in 2007 and I pretty much still read it every day.

Given what's been going on in Metatalk, it sort of feels like a 21st birthday on the same day you find out you have a major medical issue. But I still value this site and the work that goes into maintaining it, moderating it, and contributing to it.

I don't expect it will be here forever but I'm glad it's here now. And I hope the next year can heal some of the wounds in the community.

Happy birthday, Metafilter! I was a total idiot at age 21, but in contrast, I think Metafilter has improved year-over-year, even if day-by-day that progress will seem too slow, too hard won, too bitter.

I started reading here in high school, got my first account about 4 years later in 2007 (I think), and left for a few years and lurked when I realized that there were consequences for how I acted in online communities and I wasn’t ready to avoid going down in flames again. I eventually starting a Brand New Day account when I saw progress being made on social issues and couldn’t sit on the sidelines anymore. I ebb and flow with participation but this is my longest online relationship, so I’m glad we can finally buy each other a drink.

This anniversary has left me with lots of feelings I've been working thru for the past day. I joined after lurking at a time when things were looking bleak and the joining was a step, albeit small to move forward. A flag planted in my future.

My kids were young, I was married and just realizing that my plan to stay in a bad marriage until they were grown was damaging us all. That was the year I became my own advocate and became a better advocate for my children. Children who are now adults and after some shaky times have turned in to people I am incredibly proud of.

Metafilter was a big part of what helped me thru. I learned so much from Ask, questions I hadn't yet thought to ask myself or questions I was mulling over in my head TO ASK and by putting in to words realized my own answer. It's a powerful thing and I thank you all for your input.

Happy Birthday to us.

Happy birthday MetaFilter! This is the place on the internet I spend the most time at by far and to me this is still the best of the web. But I think we owe it to our members to make it a better place. MetaFilter needs to spend time this year figuring itself out and deciding what kind of place it wants to be going forward.

Damn. How did I get this old? Can't entirely blame MeFi, didn't find it for the first few years.

Tell you what though: if any of my former acquaintances from Ancient Greece drop in ... wherefore art thou, Parmenides? Diogenes? .. I'll advise them to start here.

I celebrated my 20th Metaversary a few days ago. I'm so glad I ended up here, rather than reddit, slashdot, etc.

It's been a good couple of decades, and I hope we're both around for a good couple more, at least.

Congrats. Now I'll just be over here feeling old, like everyone else.

Been registered since 2006, and I think this is probably the oldest community I still keep an eye on. Occasional forays into the sub-forums of SomethingAwful, but nowhere near as regular.
