Bad cake is still better than good pie. Hell is there even such a thing as good pie?

You forgot one

Hadrian's wall cake.

That's pretty impressive.

Before I clicked on the link, I was trying to Pict-ure what it would look like...

...yes, I'll show myself out.

I can think of 5 kinds of pie that are better than any kind of cake. That's what makes a market I guess.

I don't have a recipe to hand but lemon mascarpone sponge is my new best friend.

Your dance card is going to be full like D'Artagnan, sir. I request the midmorning slot with your choice of pastry knives or marble rolling pins.

Seriously, Strawberry-Rhubarb, lemon meringue, key lime, pumpkin, chess pie, pear-ginger galette, Pecan, Walnut, pumpkin, ricotta cheese with lemon zest, a million chocolate pie variations and that's before the delicious savory options, handpies, sheppard's pie, chicken pot pie, tamale pie, etc...

I've only had like ten decent cakes in my life and most were cheesecake or very rich chocolate cake. Pie is where it's at.

Oh, man, I will dream about that Jaffa Cake trifle tonight.

This moist chocolate cake is surrounded by crunchy chocolate soil and decorated with a piped garden. Feel free to be creative – take the opportunity to design your own garden!

Hopefully a better baker than wordsmith, chocolate soil indeed.

Oh man.

I want ALL THE CAKES.

The coffee maple walnut cake looks extremely tasty (although - what does "morish" mean?).

The Limahl cake (which is delightful) reminds me of a Japanese children's book I read (it's my favorite way to study Japanese), もりのおかしやさん (Forest Cake Shop), in which Weasel makes custom cakes for all the other forest creatures' birthdays and shows them off in the cake shop window - chocolate spikes for Hedgehog, mint frosting for Frog and multi-colored melted candy glaze for Lizard, marshmallow fluff for Rabbit.

But - yow. I don't get nearly enough cake in my diet, and it definitely seems like I need to address this.

Thanks for the advance notice about Cake Week - I'll have to find some appropriate ways to celebrate.

Thank you for this, Wordshore! (If you have any excess cake, please feel free to send it my way.)

Boston Cream Pie. It's essentially cake plus.

what does "morish" mean?

Something that makes you want more of it. Often spelled "moreish", which makes the origin & meaning a bit clearer.

Cake is just fancy bread. I do like the Stonehenge one, though.

Looks at the pie vs cake debate above... shakes head sadly...

So that "Treacle and spice Victoria sponge" looks pretty good to me but I thought Victoria sponge had to be a specific thing for it be called a Victoria sponge (GBBO has led me astray here)?

Shouldn't that be forks at dawn?

(or better cream pie throwing vs cupcake bazooka?)

Bombolini is more like a donut, but all the better.

My wife made an olive-oil thyme fig cake a bit like the one mentioned that was delicious once, she's also made excellent panforte di siena, but I really think that's more like confection than cake. I have a french style baker near that makes caneles and financiers that are to die for, but I don't know if they're cakes or pastry.

sammyo that is a Chocolate Self-saucing Pudding, not a cake. Known to generations of Australian children as the single greatest and most lethally hot item to emerge from the oven since the party pie. (context)

You are correct that it is best, however.

I really need to make that Stonehenge cake.

Current Archaeology had a thing about archaeological cakes a couple of years ago. Here, and the winner.

This magic custard cake is one of my current favourites, which manages to be both easy to make, AND simultaneously have some of the attributes of a tart (the base ends up a little reminiscent of a fudgier pie case), custard, pudding (the center is more like a thick egg tart filling) and a meringue sponge on the top. I might try a rhubarb/blackberry one this weekend...

No, you’re right, that is infuriatingly inaccurate naming. What they’ve made there is gingerbread. It has literally nothing in common with Victoria sponge apart from being a cake.

It’s not even layered!

Mod note: Added quotation marks around "Victorian sponge" per OP's request.

What they’ve made there is gingerbread.

Yep; I side-eyed that when I first saw it, but forgot to mention it in a sarcastic way in the FPP; the mods have now made a slight adjustment. Country Living is a strange publication, seemingly aimed at day-dreaming, heavily-loaded residents of the "home" counties ("Ride on a steam train with Mary Berry for four hours: £340") and it's not the first time they've labelled something in a quite inaccurate manner.

I am relieved that this "Victoria Sponge" debacle can be put behind us now. May Mary Berry's name be praised!

What's the bestest, scrummiest, cake you've eaten so far in 2020?

I was treated to four days of a nearly-flourless chocolate cake - incredibly moist and decadent - first with raspberry sauce and mint leaves, then with powdered sugar, then with butter almond sauce, and then again with raspberry sauce.

That was MAGNIFICENT.

It was also months ago, and I would love a great big slab of German's chocolate cake right about now. Also it's been years since I've had like an orange iced bundt or lemon cake; I could go for that, too.

All the cake, please!

The SO made a triple layer cheesecake for a friend having a birthday. First layer as plain cheesecake. The second was peach flavored cheesecake. The third was sliced peaches arranged like a tart tatin covered with a prosecco flavored gelatin. It looked amazing and tasted better. I'd post pics but... maybe I will.
