Classical guitarist and lute player Julian Bream has died at the age of 87. Obituaries Guardian and NYT
The conventional wisdom about the classical guitar is that the Spanish virtuoso Andrés Segovia single handedly carved out a place for it as a concert instrument worthy of the classical repertory. But I would argue, in fact, that as important as Segovia's groundwork was, the strides taken on the guitar's behalf by Julian Bream were as great, and in some ways more significant, than Segovia's.
Some quotes.

This is my favorite classical guitar piece ever, played by him. What a loss.

If anyone is interested, JOSÉ ROMANILLOS built a number of guitars for him.

Last night I listened to three performances of Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega. One by Segovia, one by John Williams, and one by Bream. Fiendishly difficult, I’d say, though I am not a musician. To my ear at least the Bream seemed so much more delicate and nuanced than the other two. An invitation more than just a demonstration of virtuosity, if that makes sense.

Anyone responsible for interpreting and popularizing Dowland was alright by me.

A friend who's a composer of contemporary guitar works and classical player of extreme repute is inconsolable. Bream was the guitar.
