Miss Girard's Christmas Gift. Lost on a Texas highway on a hot June 2019 afternoon, a young man remembers only one name: his special ed teacher of two decades earlier.

There is a GoFundMe for Chris and Miss Girard.

Girard is hoping to gain legal guardianship of Chris, which thus far has cost her close to $4,000 in attorney’s fees—disposable income she doesn’t have.

No. If you're an attorney, you're supposed to do this for free.

Skip Hollandsworth is a national treasure, as is Miss Girard, and yes, this seems like a no-brainer pro bono case for a local law firm to take on. (Though, spoilers from the GoFundMe page: things did eventually work out.)

Glad I can still cry from bittersweetness these days. What a pair of angels.

An update from Miss Girard on the GoFundMe page: (April 2, 2020)

Happy Thursday everyone! This message is from Michell:
____________
Life has been crazy in my part of the world and I am sorry that I have not posted anything until now.
I want to thank each one of you for your wonderful donation, no matter how big or small. Your gifts allowed me to get a new lawyer and I finally have gotten guardianship of Chris. That was a big day. It was less than a week after I had my much needed hip replacement. Towards the end of our court case, I realize it’s fixing to really happen and tears start flowing down my cheeks. The judge tells me not worry about it, because everyone else was crying, including him and it was true. He said this was the first case he ever had that made him cry. It was a great day. We are finally home and I am doing physical therapy and doing so much better. Chris is loving being back home and spending time with our dog. He loves helping me and even goes with me on short little walks outside. He has truly been a blessing to me and so have each one of you. You have taken a lot of worry out of lives for the time being. I thank God for each one of you and pray that he blesses you, the way you have blessed us.
Please know that your gift will be used specifically on what is needed to take care of Chris. We love each of you. Stage safe and healthy. Thank you again and God bless.

Tears in the courtroom. Tears here in my house.
