Amazing. Truly the best of the web, for a certain kind of person (me).

Nice. I really miss the old WinAmp / XMMS (for Linux) audio players. It's been all downhill since, though Clementine is not too bad.

I bet I used every single Serial Experiments Lain skin in here at one point or another.

All I wanted was to see the Zelda skin I used in college, and wouldn't you know it was the very first one displayed.

my preferred skin

I mean, I like MusicBee well enough, but I really wish winamp worked better on higher resolution displays (you can double-size it, but not all parts of classic skins support that well, and the less said about modern skins the better). I'd jump ship back to winamp in a heartbeat, and I'd even pay for it.

The impending death of Google Play Music has prompted me to reinstall Winamp so this is genuinely useful in my day-to-day life.

I actually checked the other day and Audacious, the music player I use on Linux, does still support WinAmp skins.

There was a lot of talk a year or so ago about a new WinAmp...did that ever pan out?

does this make me boring? This was the skin I used for yearssssss. I was missing WinAmp the other day as I had iTunes open on my laptop and it is just...terrible.

So I actually still use Winamp, because it's really great for streaming sites that have also not evolved since the mid-2000s. (So many Disney streams woooo)

And now, I'm going to add a billion skins to it, especially this Space Mountain one, hurray!

One of the original WinAmp authors has been working on a modernized remake called WACUP for several years. The company who owns the IP is...not great.

I upgraded my PC this past month, and went to download WINAMP and all they had was their 'new improved' OFFICIAL 5.8 release.

The Winamp now owned by the streaming company can't even get streaming working now. It's absolutely useless. I assume this is due to Chromiedge now being the thing and no longer having IE on my system it won't render the streaming page properly.

So I ended up with AIMP. I tried Foobar, Clementine and a few others, and AIMP was good enough. Real damn bummer though that the people who bought Winamp who are all about streaming can't even get their product to do streaming right now. I suppose I could find an old copy of IE just so I can have the render engine? I am assuming that's what it was beecause it worked just find on my old PC before all the latest IE shenanigans.

Also - there's a Twitter account called something like "That's a WMP Skin" because there's some famous screens of a skin and everyone thinks its winamp, and the twitter acct is like NOPE. It's WMP.

This is just reminding me how absolutely terrible so many WinAmp skins were.

But they weren't nearly as bad as k-jofol. God, what _were_ we thinking in the early 2000s?

My friend and I made skins based on ukiyo-e landscapes and water scenes, like these. They were so pretty.
posted by jb at 2:23 PM on September 4, 2020

This is amazing. I'll actually use some of these, since I still use Winamp. At this point, it's a lightweight but flexible audio player that does exactly what I want without any of the garbage I don't want.

A heads up if you're also a nerd who cares about this sort of thing: this is one of those things that will fry your entire tab history. Open it in a new tab.

Same, still use Winamp on a regular basis. It still does the job without taking over every goddamn thing on my computer. Everything does not need to be connected to everything!

ckape: "I respect whoever went and made a Captain Marvel movie tie-in skin."
IIRC, it's part of the official site for the movie being pure early internet nostalgia.

Ditto to Holy Zarquon's Singing Fish - since Google Play is headed to the scrap heap I guess it's time to figure out how to set up networked storage and nostalgically return to using Winamp.

Some of these skins are amazing - has anyone written a script to rotate through them at a set interval?

Some great memories here! I used something much like this Star Trek LCARS skin for a while.

I kinda miss the age of themed computer software now that it's all yet-another-webpage. It was a fun way to have a little personality on your desktop.

Wonder why there's no winamp 4?

Because no one wants a Winamp 4 skin.

Still my favorite joke.

Impressive collection and also impressive is that they're animated. Winamp is still my main music player.

I just want to say that this skin has been my go-to for years and is on my desktop as I type this.

(It's on Audacious, which supports (most) WinAmp skins.)

Doesn't seem to have the Sony MZ-R909 MiniDisc recorder-based skin that I continued using for a long while after abandoning that specific device along with the format as a whole (with a bit of searching, though, the Internet Archive came through).

A younger me would probably be disappointed that I now use a default skin (Osmosis) with Audacious in the Winamp Classic Interface mode.

symbiod you might hit up oldversion.com if you want an older Winamp.
Personally, I'm on Audacious now, as it'll use the Winamp skins. It's also cross-platform.
