Grace Petrie is a protest singer from Leicester, UK. Some of her most popular songs are Black Tie, Farewell to Welfare, and Pride.
Wow - she's good.

So happy to see Grace mentioned here! I've seen her live (probably over 10 times by this point?) and she's just gone from strength to strength.
It's worth checking out her Instagram where she's done an A-Z of daily cover versions - (almost) twice - during lockdown with the aforementioned Folkie Ben - highlights include Dancing On My Own, Believe and, inevitably, Let It Go. Keep an eye out for her dog Frank (a Jack Russel with dwarfism) upstaging them at every opportunity (by just being adorable).
Sadly, the Guardian don't believe she exists.

She's also been pretty vocal about supporting trans people and being anti-TERF (as mentioned in her song Black Tie), which is nice.

She writes great tunes, and all her music is available on Bandcamp if you wanna give her maximum money. Also her interview on Sofie Hagan's Made of Human podcast, a handful of days after the UK's 2019 General Election, is wonderful.

I came to Grace Petrie via The Guilty Feminist, as starfishprime mentioned and sought her out on BandCamp after hearing Black Tie so that I could throw some money her way. Having grown up as what in my time was know as a 'tomboy' and still internalizing the persistent suspicion that I'm doing gender wrong in some way, that song spoke to me deeply. That she has so many other cool songs was basically a bonus.

Oh, so a couple of years ago, Josie Long was doing this thing where she'd come to a town, find an underpass or something similar, set up a sound system, and have comedy and talks and music. And Grace Petrie performed and the entire night was just an absolute delight.
It was wonderful seeing her perform, and I completely forgot about how great she was until this post, so thank you!

My housemate, whose presence felt relatively essential to my feeling comfortable enough to start transitioning, is a huge fan of Grace's and had some small shout-out in her most recent Australian tour and I'm very glad to see her work on the blue.
Gender-switching the words to Black Tie as you go isn't super easy and doesn't always scan but I really love her stuff.
