2020: Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming

2020: Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb

2020: The ice we skate is getting pretty thin

2020: My world's on fire, how 'bout yours?

2020: I need to get myself away from this place

At least Roy Batty never had to see the hellscape of 2020.

Check out the Bill Hader/Tom Cruise on Letterman one that is likely in the "related" sidebar. That's crazy creepy

BATEMAN: You like Smash Mouth?

ALLEN: Um, they're okay.

BATEMAN: Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when "Astro Lounge" came out in '99, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. They've been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Smashmouth has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

ALLEN: Hey, Halberstram?

BATEMAN: Yes, Allen?

ALLEN: Why are there copies of the Style section all over the place? Do you... Do you have a dog? A little chow or something?

BATEMAN: No, Allen.

ALLEN: Is that a raincoat?

IDK it's like the 191st of March today, so maybe the years did stop coming

I love the cultural afterlife of All Star.

We are now as far away in time from the release of All Star as Smash Mouth were, at that time, from Van Halen's release of their debut album Van Halen.

Mr. Harvell had been warned of such an occurrence, and freely admits to not excelling in intelligence.

Going maskless at a concert, you might as well be walking on the sun.

Having just Smash Mouth's Wikipedia entry, I learned that, prior to being in Smash Mouth, Mr. Harvell was in a rap group called F.O.S. (it stood for Freedom of Speech, which may not be the first acronym to spring to mind).

They released one single in 1993, 'Big Black Boots' (the cassingle's available for $1.12 on Discogs, but you probably want to pay the extra four cents for the 12", which also includes the instrumental).

Mr. Harvell attempts to rap like Ice Cube (who released a song with a chorus about big black boots during the previous year), while his colleagues, whose names may have been lost to history, aim for sort of a dollar-store DJ Muggs beat. To be kind, I'll say that they're... not especially successful.

Like, it's not the worst white-guy rapping I've ever heard, but there's a good chance it's the worst white-guy rapping you've ever heard.

I'm sorry, future historians. We're just going to absolutely fuck the historical record by the time we're done.

Not a big fan of Smash Mouth after they held an August 9 maskless concert, pronouncing "fuck that COVID shit!", that generated 100 COVID cases.

Maybe even more, if that study pegging the number of Sturgis Rally-related cases at around 250,000 is right.

They should just change their name to The Super Spreaders.
