Thanks for this link roundup, Going to Maine! I just recently learned about Acorn Woodpeckers from David Allen Sibley's (extremely awesome) What It's Like to Be a Bird and was utterly blown away. I had no idea that any avian species would share the responsibilities of gathering food and raising young between breeding and non-breeding adults, practice responsible stewardship of environmental resources, and invest in public works projects that span generations. It is awe-inspiring and humbling. Seems to me that humans have a lot to learn from Acorn Woodpeckers, the occasional territorial battle or eye-gouging (from that NYT link) notwithstanding.
