"It is illogical to allow you to suffer"

Two lovely, sweet, heartwarming short pieces of Star Trek fan fiction that take place in the reboot universe (that is, the recent films, starting with the first JJ Abrams entry). "Lunch and Other Obscenities" by Rheanna presents the culture clash between Nyota Uhura and her Orion roommate, Gaila, in their first year at Starfleet Academy. Includes a Vulcan restaurant with a fitting name, people overcoming misunderstandings, and two shared meals that make me happily tear up. And "Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit" by lazulisong shows us James T. Kirk at the Academy, avoiding anyone finding out just how brilliant he is, intertwined with the point of view of his Vulcan mentor. Includes amazing curses, a tour of Portland, Oregon, and someone saying to a child, "I propose to treat you as a rational being capable of rational thought."

There is seriously vegan food all over Portland. You can usually get bacon with it.

Acceptable stories, both. Appropriate quantities of logic.

Oh good, the podfic of Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit is on AO3.

I've never actually read the story, but I cannot even tell you how many times I've listened to templemarker's version. It's just the perfect audiobook.

Also, thank you for linking the AO3 version of "Lunch and Other Obscenities" - I had it linked to a Livejournal version in my giant Pinboard recs pile, and, unsurprisingly, it's been removed. So now I can bring it back yay.

(Although this just reminds me that I still should keep going through my Pinboard recs and clearing out the dead ones. There's. Just. So. Many.)

I finally have meatspace fannish friends and one of them is wild about Trek. One of the current joys of my life is sending good stuff her way, so thank you for the recs!

"You—you—masticator!" Gaila shrieked, backing away in revulsion.

In like Flynn.

I have read Graduate Vulcan For Fun and Profit roughly 200 times. It's somehow still as good as the first time I read it.
