I've read some people saying they think this was faked. Maybe so and maybe no, but I certainly enjoyed the crackup anyway.

Ok, so now Kate McKinnon is the voice of reason, and you think things are a LITTLE off the rails? ~^

SNL is a scripted show, people do know that, right? Like you can see Kate and Colin reading off the cue cards. It's still powerful to see them break character like that.

I think it was probably faked. But it also really expressed pretty much exactly how I feel at work right now so it was a very cathartic watch!

I think she was very genuinely laughing, because the squeaky toy was funny. That doesn't mean the sketch wasn't scripted to go that way.

Well we used to call it breaking the fourth wall before we called it faked, especially when you're entering in as an audience member to some sort of performance. Faked is a bit of a loaded term. Lorne Michaels hates it when they break character and I think that's one thing that's kept the show cohesive. It is far too easy to break character like Jimmy Fallon used to do for a cheap laugh, I don't know why he allowed that.

Kate McKinnon is one of those players like Fallon who can't keep a straight face, I think that's part of the meta-joke.

It was a better than good bit that was both funny and conveyed the world-weariness of the moment.

So. The good news on that front is SNL has one of the absolute strictest quarantine requirements of any show. The players and crew are pretty much on an island un to themselves within Manhattan in order to keep the show possible. I'll agree - the optics on a bit of it can be a bit brash given what most people have to get through right now, but - if anyone were about to stick a sherlock pipe in your mouth - I assure you Kate McKinnon is probably one of the safest people to do so.

From all the folklore I've read about SNL, Lorne doesn't like characters breaking because it stalls the sketch and he's a stickler for things running on time.

It seems like some of the cast is given some latitude depending on how good they are. John Mulaney would regularly rewrite Bill Hader's lines at the last second when performing as Stefon to get him to break and Hader would always recover really quickly.

I thought this was genuinely funny. Particularly it hinges on the unreality of the life we're all living now. He asks "Kate are you OK" and she says "I'm obviously not". And the surface of that is how we all feel now in this time of Covid, the half-joking half-crying conversations we have with friends. But they're both giggling uncontrollably at the sound of a squeaky toy, so it comes off as funny more than awful. And then on top of that the shocking physical intimacy of the two; they're touching, laughing in each other's faces, having simple human contact. It's a whole lot of emotions and stress all thrown together and on top of it all is the simple laughing at a squeaky toy. It works great!

Imagine how funny McKinnon could have been if she'd had someone with a single improv/comedy clue to play off of.

Oh no, that's not fair at all. Jost is playing the straight man here, as you have to do in the news anchor role. What's interesting is he mostly keeps the straight man shtick going right through the character-breaking part. I mean he's laughing hysterically, so he's creating the mood, but he's just there asking basic questions like "what is going on?" and "ok, sure" to get out of the way to let McKinnon deliver the jokes. I don't think that's just a lack of imagination on his part; McKinnon's got plenty of materials (and squeaky toy squeaks) to carry the scene. He's making room for her to do it.

He even gives this lame little speech at the end about "we can be resilient, we can figure this out..." all to set up her last Weknowdis joke, which is to have him repeat the inane joke ("wecandodis"). He walks the hilarity all the way back to boring normality just to make himself the butt of a joke she's set up. The joke doesn't quite land (IMHO) but it's not because he lacks chops.

This part was delivered so effortlessly and was the climax of the non breaking part of the skit:

"And now he’s holding Rallies"

"Ya, Who does this
He do this
We know this
We hate this
He do this
We know this"

So good.

Yeah, the "Kate, are you okay?" and everything after was clearly part of the sketch! It's a joke/reflection about how we are all NOT okay right now.

It's been a long time since I watched--basically since the Fey/Poehler days. I found the whole Weekend Update to be funnier than I remembered ("it's like watching someone smoke through the hole in their neck").

I love Kate McKinnon in character, and I hated her in person in Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. She was just bizarrely unrelatable. Maybe that's what you're like if you're hanging out with Jerry Seinfeld, even for short periods; but it mystified me that her interview persona was so much not a comedian.

Seeing her break the fourth wall in this way was a bit of a relief to me because I could finally connect the person to all the comedy of hers I love.

Funny stuff. I think this was entirely planned, but that doesn't make it less funny. The concept here (IMO) is that everything has gone to crazy-hell, so this bit is about even a comedy sketch lampooning the crazy-hell descends into crazy-hell.

I like McKinnon, but a little of her goes a long way for me. Nothing against her personally. Different people spark to different types of comedy!... that's natural and has always been the case. This bit starts out in a way reminding me of when Chris Elliott would appear on Letterman—way in the past—as "Marlon Brando." He's do an earnest, deeply committed "impersonation" of Brando that was so deeply weird and off the mark that the comedy came from the sheer ludicrousness of the situation. It was a bit "about impressions" as Elliott was just acting bizarre and infusing some minor Brando traits into a surreal version of what a celebrity impersonation really is. Not gonna say the Elliott/Brando bits were truly "deep"— but the comedy came from a TV audience knowing certain things about celeb impersonations (and what those impersonation bits are "supposed to be and expected to be") and then having those expectations subverted in completely absurd ways.

There exists an old VHS transfer on YouTube (Google it) of a Chris Elliott special from 1985 called "FDR: A One Man Show" which lampoons the concept of "one man/woman stage shows" in a similar way. It is bizarre almost beyond description, and I find it hard to believe it ever made it on television. I highly recommend it. It's not laugh-out-loud all the way through, as some parts are just so weird that it's uncomfortable to watch. Brilliant stuff.

Anyway, that's my take on this funny clip. She did a segment that is as off the rails, ludicrous and funny/unfunny and as hopelessly misguided and ultimately... funny. About our real world situation that is clearly and dangerously off the rails.

(nothing worse than people dissecting comedy, but hey, that's what Metafilter comments are made for!)

This bit was really funny and cathartic, but the joke that absolutely wrecked our household was Michael Che's:
Trump survived COVID....I'm not gonna say I'm disappointed, but it kinda feels like when there's a car crash and the only survivor is the drunk driver.
