For some reason this reminds me of the comic who sings songs one syllable off (which is mind-bendingly difficult for most people, I think.)

I thought this was going to be this: Nursery Rhymes and Numbers (with Alan Stewart) - Numberphile Podcast.

I have occasionally thought about starting an all-Gilligan's Island Theme cover band, only to be hampered by the fact that I am not good at music, I don't know anyone else who would join the band, and it's an awful lot of effort for a cheap gag.

I'm pretty sure that being forced to listen to the In a Gadda Da Vita one twice would count as cruel and unusual punishment.

Can we assume that Gilligans Island is the Platonic song, both melody and lyrics? All other songs are just imperfect forms of it.

I have no musical talent myself so forgive me if this is obvious, but if all these songs work on Gilligan's Island, won't they all work on any one of these songs? Are they reverse compatible?

I get the humor in doing it on Little Buddy's theme song, but, after listening to all of these, I am a little bit numb.

I just went to check if the takedown war against Stairway to Gilligan’s Island was still on. Apparently not. And better yet, there’s a version by Puddles Pity Party!

The Gilligan song is a personal earworm for me because of wildlife.
When you lead hikes in bear and mountain lion country, the one thing you don't want to do is Surprise the megafauna, who don't really want to be around you either. So what do you do to keep a bunch of kids or newbies safe without freaking them out?
"Hey, how many TV theme songs do you know? I bet you can't sing all the words."

Just in case you ever come across a bunch of retired trailhound ladies doing a chorus of The Love Boat, or a troop of tired Scouts on their way back, murmuring 'In West Philadelphia born and raised / on the playground was where I spent most of my days' to stay awake.

I'm going to sing The Itsy Bitsy Spider version to the babies at work next week. They won't know the difference, but it'll probably drive my coteacher nuts.

Yep, that's exactly what it means. See for example, from the second via link, Amazing Grace to the tune of Pokemon.
