This year marks the twentieth anniversary of Wong Kar-wai’s masterpiece, In the Mood for Love. Starring Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung, the movie won Best Actor and Technical Grand Prize at Cannes, and is frequently listed as one of the greatest films of all time. The movie is a spiritual sequel to Days of Being Wild, with 2046 and the upcoming Blossoms Shanghai considered followups. 20 Years On, In the Mood for Love Remains the Ultimate Fashion Romance (Vogue); Celebrating 20 years of being In the Mood for Love (i-d/Vice). Roger Ebert’s review. Bonus dancing scene cut from the movie. posted by adrianhon (13 comments total) 47 users marked this as a favorite

I literally just had the itch to watch either this or 2046 this past weekend. Unfortunately, I no longer really have the necessary blocks of time to watch films at home - seeing things in theatre allowed me to carve out the necessary time/space/quiet-contemplation I need to enjoy films, but that's gone now.

Wong Kar-Wai makes beautiful films. Love that gorgeous Christopher Doyle cinematography, too.

I saw this at the Swedish Film Institute in the spring of 2019. I spent a long time thinking about the ending. Totally worthwhile.

What an amazing movie. I had a hard time getting into 2046 but I might try again. Chunking Express might be my favorite of his so far but I've haven't seen enough. I really want to see The Grandmaster but not the US version that Harvey Weinstein hacked to pieces; sadly the original cut is hard to come by.

Watching In The Mood For Love meaningfully broadened my taste in film. As a teen I mostly considered a movie wasted without a good car chase, and it's the first I can remember watching and appreciating that was purely about people and their relationships. Maybe it's the impact of that early experience affecting my judgement a little, but it's still one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.

In fact, FLC's "World of Wong Kar Wai" retrospective features 4k restorations of almost all of his films. Here's the schedule.

I was going to post the link to the FLC Wong Kar Wai retrospective, but ohkay already did, which is great!

2046 is so beautiful, and tenderly heartbreaking, give it another chance if you can.

Fort Mason Flicks'/Roxy Theater's drive-in screening of "In the mood for love" sold-out, but maybe I'll manage to sneak a peek, and find the radio frequency, from some discreet vantage point...

octothorpe, I really hope you try 2046 again. I love both of these movies, but parts of 2046 still haunt me, and I mean that in the best possible way.
