I have known about Cher my whole life, but never knew her real name and it somehow never occurred to me that she had a real name.

My mother shared this link on our family group chat a few days ago, as one of the few things she, my sister and I all have in common is abiding love and respect for Cher.

Our neighbours put up a big illuminated sign that says "believe" as part of their Christmas decorations each year, and every time I go past it I know in my heart that I'm believing in Cher. Not Santa, not Jesus, just Cher.

I love how she's totally magnanimous towards Sonny, because she can afford to be: it's clear he was a total shit, it's clear that she was the one with the talent, and he skied himself into a tree, while she's still living her best life, selling out Vegas concerts and saving lonely elephants. She doesn't have to say it, because everyone knows.
