Fare Well: Good riddance to the last page torn from this scunnered year

"We say Wha’s like us, singing Auld Lang’s Syne. We share the planet’s air. What’s yours is mine." Assembled in the sombre times of a Covid lockdown and an unwanted Brexit - Scotland's Hogmanay this year features Fare Well - a series of drone displays by (part1, part 2, part 3) set to poetry by Scots Makar, Jackie Kay. posted by rongorongo (10 comments total) 17 users marked this as a favorite

This is really beautiful. I never really knew anything about Hogmanay, and now I've fallen down a rabbit hole about it!

We live, these days, in Edinburgh and watched these films in the silent city with a real degree of pride in our temporary country. The dark poetry here, the resilience, the rootedness in landscape -- it resonates. Nicola Sturgeon, who lives down the street, does her best to see us through, sensible, sad, with just a hint of hope slowly brightening.

First day of the year and I've already learned a new word—and it's a damn fine word, as well. Onward and upward!

I had a good cleansing cry through it.

I stumbled across Miss PunnyPennie's Twitter account the other day. I'm not really a poetry fan, but her The Year I Shouldnae Hae Hud is wonderful. Equally so is I'm No Havin' Children.

Those are great, TheDonF.
Jackie Kay's poem mentions the idea of the "three craws" - and for some context most Scots will think of this song, by Jimmy McGregor, when they hear about it - maybe to the 4th craw in particular.

The original Makars were appointed to the royal Scottish court and the idea of having a publicly funded poet laureate was revived by the Scottish Parliament in 2004. Jackie Kay is the third incumbent of the role - and I guess 2020 has been a fruitful source of material. Here she is, last April, explaining and then reading "Essential" - which talks about the contribution of frontline workers.

This was very special indeed. Quite amazing. Thanks so much for sharing. (BTW link to third poetry part takes you to part 2, not part 3. Part 3 is at https://www.edinburghshogmanay.com/images/uploads/Fare_Well_-_Part_3_1.pdf)

A little late here - but adding the Behind the Scenes video - which describes how Fare Well was put together.
