"I left out a lot, mainly because I'm in pain..."

Hot Pepper History was a YouTube series from the Indiana Historical Society. The concept is simple: a staff member prepares a (short) history lesson and then eats a hot pepper and... tries to deliver it. Explaining that they didn't feel right about doing a Drunk History project, the IHS settled on this method instead. You can learn about the squirrel migration of 1911, the 1909 National Balloon Chapionship, or where the term hoosier comes from (there's even a bloopers reel or two)

this would be a great way to replace written exams for any subject, ultimate clarity on what you know, and can say.

I was a fan of this presentation method for video game reviews, I am a fan of it for this, and I will give it a ballkpark endorsement for presentations on any other topic.

These are so charming and funny. I'm a sucker for this setup, which works so well in The Hot Ones (previously). There's a great mix of controlled preparation and human knowledge running smack into a bowl of chaos and discomfort invited in from the natural world. It feels like a very old sort of comedy.

It also weirdly reminds me of that project with women reading aloud from books while having an orgasm. (Hysterical Literature previously; NSFW! Even if WFH!) They're portraits of people trying to stay on task through this intense physical experience, and it's hilarious and mesmerizing and relatable to watch them manage such distraction.

How far can we take this concept? People explain things while needing to poop?

This is fantastic. As a Hoosier, I approve heartily.

The first one I watched was the squirrel migration video and, when I saw the big banana peppers in the bowl, I figured this was a big wimp-out. But, no! She dug out a habanero and damned if she didn’t chow down and go for it. Salute!

I also liked the Lincoln tissue box. I loves my history nerds.

I have nothing to say other than these are hilarious. And interesting! But also hilarious.

The fire alarm going off during filming is perfect.

Ah. The fire alarm is during The Crawfordsville Monster [strobe warning due to the fire alarm ].

Perfect timing.

Discovering this series of gems has also let me discover just how big of an utter dumpster fire the YouTube app on Roku is. Dear lord.

From my sampling I have concluded that women are better able to tolerate pain than men.

I am charmed and delighted to find out about these videos, and have enjoyed a few - hope to watch all of them soon because they are so fun. Thank you for the post, jessamyn!

The Hoosier AM News anchor demonstrated two pieces of evidence that he was a cyborg. The first was that he ate the pepper and reported the (very interesting and illuminating) story in a very well-paced, professional style.

The second was that his circuitry beeped about two-thirds of the way through.

I love these things, the hot pepper and hot sauce interviews and such, and I am glad this one isn't full of hipsters or barfing people. [Though I will give the Pete Davidson Hot Ones episode a hallway pass. And Pete did not barf! But the host is a hipster. Pete drinks oatmilk and NORMALIZES it just by his drinking it.]
