Arcane Fortune, or, What if SimCity and Civilization had a Baby?

Arcane Fortune is, essentially, a grand strategy game inspired by SimCity, Dwarf Fortress,, and the Civilization series, among other inspirations. It's free to play and the source code is available.

On a personal note, the author has gone out of his way to make the game playable by the blind, though that's still a work in progress as is the game itself. If I can't play DF or Civilization, I'll at least have this, which is pretty interesting in its own right.

But Dwarf Fortress isn’t even at version 1.0 yet!

I love super-ambitious stuff like this.

On that note, does anyone know what happened to Ultima Ratio Regum?

entity447b, I saw something a few months back about the author resuming development. It looks like his blog has fairly recent information. :)

What are the sys-reqs for this on OSX? Nothing on their website or Wiki have anything on this. Kind of wondering if it can be played on older versions of OSX.

Thorzdad, I saw a note saying that it should theoretically work on as old as 10.7. Pretty sure that was on the wiki somewhere…

It's basically a Unix application so it's not like it's making use of new features. I would expect it would be worth trying no matter what version of OSX you're running.

This looks extremely my jam, but it also looks like the kind of game that would be best enjoyed by playing for many hours at a time. And I have two small kids. An hour or three a week is about all I have to spare.

So I guess I’ll need to check back in once Arcane Fortune is at version 0.5 or something.

Has anyone found any good articles about what the game is like to play?

With Big Sur, we crossed the divide into where 32-bit programs don't run anymore. So it does matter, but only if your macOS is fully up-to-date.

It's a 64-bit application anyway. :)

For the past year it's been listed on Steam with the note "Planned Release Date: time is subjective"

I like the ideas of these games but find myself increasingly fond of simpler games with few elegantly combined mechanics. XCom 1, Civ 1, Simcity 2000...
Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft et al. seem to just add feature after feature. Do such dedicated solo developers usually (or ever) remove mechanics that took them effort to implement?
