The Aziraphale and Crowley of Lake Merritt

During the pandemic, Oaklanders discovered an unusual pair of ducks hanging out at Lake Merritt, and they became locally famous through local social media. But specialists in animal rescue realized that there was a problem, and took steps to save these domesticated fowl from a dangerous environment. This is entirely charming, and there are lovely photos and links to video clips in the article.

Those ducks didn’t know that they eat for free at Subway.

They may even get to know the other resident power couple, a goose named Echo that has bonded with a cow named Angel.
Way to upstage the ducks in your own story.

The actual rescue story just killed me. Pick 'em up, carry 'em off, snuggle in the car. My heart.

Poor lil babies. The kind of awesome decision making skills that got them dumped there in the first place on display in the Reddit thread w people saying things like oh they're fine which I know bc they've been there for a year. Like so what you're saying is that bad situations just don't last very long? So by virtue of how long it has lasted you can tell how bad it was? We need an overhaul of our educational system bc this is representative of so much.

We saw a similar situation at a park in Christchurch. We talked to the SPCA, who said they couldn't rescue the geese because technically they can live in a park like that. They all died. I'm glad to read this and it makes me wish I'd found a way to do more for the abandoned waterfowl I found.
