On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, Rebecca Black has released a hyperpop remix of her smash viral song Friday featuring Dorian Electra, Big Freedia, & 3OH!3 and produced by Dylan Brady of 100 gecs.

Two weeks earlier, Black also released a new non-novelty single, Girlfriend. And, of course, she is on TikTok.

The song was actually released on Wednesday, the actual 10 year anniversary date, but I thought it more appropriate to post this on Friday Friday gotta get down on Friday.

I'm glad to have this time-capsule/time-lapse on what's happened in pop (and hyperpop) in the last decade.

The rage comic faces are an unexpected retro twist. Oh god, they weren't intended to be contemporary and edgy, were they?

On edit: Big Freedia at 1:58 is indeed the highlight here, even if Rebecca doesn't take her chance to twerk for it.

I loved how delightfully awful the original was. This... not so much.

The bass at the beginning makes me think and hope my oft-joked donk revival will actually happen.

I kind of admire how she's sort of embraced the absurdity of the whole thing and I'd guess whoever funded her original video also funded a PR firm for her these past couple of years. Whatever. I'm glad she's having fun.

I still don't know if my favorite line is "Sunday comes afterwards" or "which seat will I take?" though.

It took almost the whole 10 years to get that song out of my head, and NOW IT'S BACK.

Old Deadhead here. I will admit it. I like the original Friday video. Catchy tune. Earworm to the max, but so what. Rebecca Black just being a teen. She is OG as my kids MIGHT say.

Nah, it was a shoestring "put your kid in a music video!!!" service, I think a birthday present. Not PR-firm money.

That's a lot of MeFi love for a one-hit-wonder.

I unironically love the original and I thought Rebecca Black seemed like a very genuine person in how she handled viral fame. I like the new song too!

Looking at the tags, I'm surprised this is the first post including Dorian Electra on Metafilter... they are *so good*. Their whole thing is like a ridiculous genderfluid hyperpop ironically appropriating toxic masculinity, and they've had Rebecca Black in one song already, Edgelord.

(have some more Dorian Electra aaah so good)

Girlfriend is an unironically fun song - I mean, it's not blowing me over, but fun and hey, queer content in a pop-bubble-gum song!

As for the original - I was never a fan, but I also didn't understand why anyone attached her to its rather inane lyrics. Those are entirely the fault of the song-writers: Los Angeles record producers Clarence Jey and Patrice Wilson. She was a kid, she sang the lyrics they gave her - the inanity was all thanks to the adult men who wrote it.

Sunday...comes after WEEERRRRRRRDDDDS.

I fucking love Friday. I used to play it every Friday to wake up my teen before they told me NO DAD IT'S NOT EVEN IRONICALLY FUNNY CUT IT OUT OR I'M RUNNING AWAY.

I've killed Friday at karaoke. I'm not good, but I'm enthusiastic.

Also, I should really do an FPP on Willa Paskin's Decoder Ring podcast. She is so amazing and takes a scholarly approach to pop culture phenomena.

Here's her episode on Rebecca Black's Friday.

Truly the canonical way to sing the song

I'm not sure what hyperpop is and I'm terrified that I'm going to find out now.

It's been how long already? ...both durations: this week and the decade.

(We do have the scheduled task to shut down the cloud-provided services our company won't use/don't want to be billed for over the weekend. The computer running it plays ”Friday, Friday / Gotta shut down on Friday.”)

I see the remix video fixes my main complaint about the original.

This remix is kind of generically what I would I would expect a 100 gecs remix to sound like, by which I mean 100% amazing. Fantastic post!
