Oh that’s a nice article. I miss Calvin and Hobbes.

Although, given the date on the on the original "Proto-Calvin" tweet (April 1!!), that may be apocryphal.

“Legends reveled” is a pun-tastic typo for such celebration-worthy content

The story in that "legends reveled" link about Watterson revising a couple strips to take out Calvin complaining he must be adopted is fantastic because the edited version preserves the sense of the joke exactly without that bit. The actual funny part of the joke didn't need it.

I'll bet that's generally the case when someone tells a joke that contains an inadvertent slur. If it's a good joke, you can take out the slur without ruining the joke. If you can't, it probably wasn't a good joke in the first place.

It is said that Hobbes played the same role in Calvin's Mom's life when she was a little girl, that he now plays Calvin's life. The idea is that when Calvin "found" the stuffed tiger in the woods, his mother had placed it there. Here are a couple of brilliant takes from Reddit:

"It’s still my headcanon that Hobbes originally belonged to Calvin’s mother. That is why she occasionally “forgets” he’s just a stuffed tiger and talks to him, or calls out to him when searching for him." -s wordofthemorning

"This reminds me of that comic when Calvin forgets Hobbes in the woods, and after he goes to sleep his parents go looking for him and Calvin's mom calls Hobbes' name, and then realizes while looking embarrassed" - boss_germ

Huh. I find it really hard to believe that the washing machine strip was never reprinted in any of the collections because I very clearly remember that strip and I was just shy of turning three when it was originally printed... But I eventually had ALL the books.

And still we have NO FORKING IDEA what The Noodle Incident was. When is anyone going to ask the hard questions?

We have NO IDEA whether it even involved a FORK.

From the article:
"No, none of those decals depicting Calvin peeing on something are legit."

Or even worse, the kneeling pseudo-Calvin, praying.

I remember the washing machine comic as well. I was in my 20s-30s during the 80s, and followed Calvin & Hobbes religiously.

>Whenever there's been hope of a potential Calvin and Hobbes licensing agreement, it's been struck dead by Watterson's staunch opposition.

Wait, you're telling me they're not going to end up shilling for DoorDash during the superbowl?

How will my childhood survive?

The fan made knock off where Calvin ignores Hobbes after being prescribed medication for his hyper activity is a kick in the gut. That's all I got.

I have held on to a few samples of Bill's work from our days at Kenyon college... here's a neat one from our senior year; he made a spoof poster of a "talk" our fellow classmate Tom Chesnutt was supposedly going to make titled "Iran, the Nuclear Option". Bonus enjoyment if you're a Dr. Strangelove fan!

I think the washing machine strip was published in earlier printings of the first book, Calvin and Hobbes, but not the compilation book The Essential Calvin and Hobbes: A Calvin and Hobbes Treasury which includes Calvin and Hobbes and Something Under the Bed Is Drooling. I should find my copy and check...

There's also this very similar-ish washing machine-based strip from a couple weeks later that sometimes I combine in my brain where Hobbes is in the washer.

Presumably he never gave it, lotusstp, because Hobbes ate him.

Asked and answered: from Calvin’s lips to our ears, “NO ONE CAN PROVE I DID THAT!!” Grand jury or not, he’s sticking to his story. It’s time to stop dwelling in the past and move on.
