I wasn't impressed until the visualization of banana-rise at the 30 second mark. I started giggling uncontrollably, and may need to take a mental health day away from all reality for a bit now.

Why is the banana translucent? Is this an artifact of space-going fruit? A cosmic ray interaction? I need someone to science the shit out of this.

I believe the "translucency" is an illusion created by viewing the banana through Earth's atmosphere.

Yes - it's actually the apparent opacity of the banana that is the illusion produced when viewed through the atmosphere. People get that wrong a lot.

What happens to the color of a banana in vacuum with a few hundred Kelvin loading is a question I don't know the answer to.

If I had to limit my banana consumption to bananas which came from the same distance from me that the ISS is from the earth's surface, I would have no bananas.
(A Metafilter thread wouldn't be complete without a little bit of dead goat.)
