a note of encouragement written by Douglas Adams to himself.

I like that Douglas Adams' authorial voice even comes out in notes to himself! I hadn't heard of this project (collecting of his ephemera in book form) but it sounds pretty great. Recently I've had the pleasure of revisiting some of Adams' work as my son is ageing into the right age for Adams. It has been fun to see what he connects with, what still works and has been a real boon in this last dark year to share a laugh about something Adams wrote that I hadn't read since I was a young teen.

I think everyone whose done any writing has done this same kind of complaining at one time or another. The thing that makes Douglas Adams different from us all is reflected best in my absolute favorite sentence from this article:

"Typically for Adams, his complaining quickly morphs into an imagined conversation with a dragon called Lionel."

“I like deadlines! I like the whooshing sound they make as they go by.”

Gone Twenty years now? If he'd lived, he might be almost done with another book by now.

From what I have seen, people who worked closely with Adams were constantly frustrated with his deadline issues.

I am comforted to see that he found his own characters tiresome and dull when they weren't. This is something that so many writers go through, including me. (And if he was tired of them, it might explain a lot about the books after the third one.)

I relistened to the original h2g2g radio drama last week. It remains my favorite version of the work, perhaps my favorite Douglass anything.

What's a burk?

I think "burk" is a mis-spelling for "berk", which is basically a fool.

I also see that "Berk" is Cockney rhyming slang - "Berk" is short for "Berkley Hunt", which rhymes with....well.
