Televised World Part 3: The Monster Who Ran With Good People

An ordinary young couple share their condo with a wacky slacker, and the couple’s nephew and niece show up in later seasons. Sounds like a standard sitcom, right? Except it’s smarter and wiser than you’d expect, the slacker becomes less slack over time, and the new characters are well-received... partly because the show’s nasty villain, having not spent years messing with THESE ones, sees his chance to take a risk, try acting kindly toward them, and maybe, just maybe, become a better person. This is The Raccoons, now on YouTube for free in its entirety (Seasons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Come run with them.

Cool! I can add this to my list of grainy, childhood-nostalgia pumps that had a major impact on my development. Plus, this show was way less disturbing than The Mouse and his Child.

Oh my goodness, this just made my day. I watched it in French (on Canal Famille!) but the distorted theme music and animations brought back so many memories.

I thought this was Nelvana, but no, it was in-house at CBC. Unexpected.

This is the third independent mention of The Raccoons I've seen on the internet in the last couple of months. Must be something in the water.

The show holds up well. Quite good animation, outstanding voice work by Michael Magee as Cyril Sneer, a great new-wave synth and drum-machine soundtrack. The ending theme, particularly the version recorded after Lisa Lougheed joined the cast in the second season, is a banger.

And I was tickled to discover the French version of Run With Us a while ago: Viens Vers Nous

Did they post these up to create hype for the reboot that is coming next year?

The 80s Canadian animation industry was much smaller, so there was a ton of overlap in the labour force. A good number of people walked out of Sheridan College and into the Ottawa studios that made these, then headed back to Toronto for work at Nelvana (stuff like Ewoks & Droids).

I had a stack of Xeroxes of hilarious (and somewhat NSFW) cubicle art from friends who'd worked at Atkinson/Hinton/Crowley during Racoons...of course, I finally tossed them a couple weeks ago.
