Like everybody else this time last year, Irish Film Twitter was newly in lockdown, bored and scared. So #BeyondFriday was launched, a celebration of cult classics and genre movies. To celebrate the 50th instalment last week, Dean Van Nguyen ranked all fifty movies featured.

That's quite a list. I've actually seen several of these in the theater first run (being of a certain age). I just rewatched Hard Target not too long ago because it is quite easily the best Van Damme film.

The list really picked up around no. 20, as it should have. Hard Target! That's (almost) the best Van Damme, I (nearly) agree, plus it has everything, a man biting a snake's head off, motorbike jumps through fire repeated from multiple angles, 80's hair, everything. I saw Death Race 2000 at the time, I've only seen it once and it remains one of my favorite films, there's some gorgeous imagery in it.

Of others I've seen, the one with the biker buried on his bike in a standing stone circle ... yeah. Hmm. The Hammer anthologies ... Yeah! Ah-ha! It's pity there was no space made for The Devil Rides Out, with it's fabulous imagery and gorgeous colour - but oh well. Maybe it's not quite ridiculous enough. I was cross at first that Total Recall came in so high but having read the rationale for that it's ok. Even though Running Man should be in there instead. All in all a nice list with lots to check out. Especially with regard to lockdown brain.

Anyhow this post has made me go look up the OST for Red Sonia and it's nice to hear it again

Man, #BeyondFriday loves Larry Cohen films almost as much as I do.

The Lucio Fulci entries, for your viewing, ummm, "convenience":

#1: Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979)
#6: Conquest (1983)

In The Glove (#40), I hope they at least allowed Rosey Grier to knock a building off its foundation with a giant knitting needle, or something.

The Glove is an interesting gritty low-budget late-70s detective movie. Worth seeing if that fits your scope. Swell theme song!
