Your hat sucks is an essay by Gill Partington about the venerable web repository of avant-garde literature and art, UbuWeb, and its founder Kenneth Goldsmith. She discusses and expands on her essay in a wide-ranging podcast interview with Thomas Jones.

Thank you for posting this! I had come across UbuWeb a few years ago but this helps me appreciate its weirdness far better. I had no idea of its heritage and context!

UbuWeb! I’m excited to read this, for certain.

Interesting that they mention AAARG but fail to actually link to them? I find AAARG to be much more useful than UbuWeb, but the AAARG website also has not worked properly for me in about two years since I really made my Pi-Hole blocklist extremely severe and I'm not sure what I broke or how to fix it without starting over with an entirely new blocklist.

Every time ubuweb appears in the media, it reminds me that I need to download my faves because who knows when someone's going to try to nuke it.

I'm glad that saving your faves is at least currently cost-effective. While all other PC parts seem to have exploded in price, standard hard drives have stayed about where they were. Meaning storage is extremely cheap because everyone is using streaming services, so fuck it, buy storage, save my own copies.

Yeah, had some issues with digital losses recently. Very annoying.

Long time WFMU listeners will remember Kenneth Goldsmith as DJ Kenny G (from 1996-2009 or so) whose Hour of Pain show was often very challenging for the average listener.

Difficult listening hour, the spot on your dial for that relentless and impenetrable sound of ... Difficult ... Music?

"The book pokes fun at the absurdities of copyright: what if, for instance, the John Cage estate demanded the removal of unauthorised copies of his completely silent piece, 4’33”? (Spoiler: they have.)"
