Here's a legit link (I assume) to the quiz w/no paywall.

I cannot tell y'all how excited I am for Opening Day 2021 to be here!

Go Yankees!!!

Loved the bonus questions. Of course.

Remind me why we should give a damn what The Bowtied Monster, a man who attacked taking victims of college sexual assault seriously says about anything? Hell, his choice of opening quote in the piece is illustrative of his misogyny.

37 questions. If I'm generous, 8 of them include players or teams who have played in the 21st century, though most of them got their start in the 90s. This seems less like a quiz and more like an exercise in boomer nostalgia, cherry-picking questions that allow readers to reminisce about Warren Spahn and Duke Snider. I mean, any quiz that has Nellie Fox as the answer twice is tilted just a bit in favor of the 1950s.

I'd rather talk about baseball, which is just a lot of jerks, instead of George freaking Will, who is 100% jerks.

Boo to George Will, but yay for Opening Day!

OK, so, it’s raining in Boston and the Nationals caught a COVID outbreak right before opening day after making it through spring training clean so their opener against the Mets is postponed.

BUT STILL. Opening day, hooray!

Opening day in Cincinnati: woke up to snow! on the deck and windshields of the cars. And then it started flurrying in little snowballs, teeny-tiny baseball-shaped balls! It's currently snowing; it would be drizzle if it were warmer. And it's windy.

Still: BASEBALL! A regular season! And we have tickets for a game in June - AT THE ACTUAL BALLPARK.

Play ball! Go Reds!

We bought tickets to opening day at a point when they have a significantly limited maximum attendance and a whole bunch of restrictions in place. Then, our idiot governor relaxed a bunch of Covid controls and since then the team added more tickets for that day. I feel like that's a whole lotta bullshit. And, even though we're both fully vaccinated, it has kind of soured the idea of going.

Oh, FFS. Professional baseball's been around for nearing two centuries now. To limit a baseball quiz to the last 20 years is to be in deep denial of its long history.

If "such and such thing happened last in 1963 to which player?" offends you, well, I got some real bad news for about 99.8% of the game of baseball.

Also:

Go Dodgers!

And since I bought a house where I can see the stadium from my backyard: Go Angeles also! Except when you play the Dodgers!

I neither said that it offended me nor that it should be limited to the last twenty years of baseball. I merely observed that it seemed heavily tilted towards a particular era (which also happens to be the era of the quiz author's youth).

Important news for baseball fans: MLB.tv has added a feature where you can choose to have the radio audio over the video feed. It's a-maz-ing, as you can have the (almost infallibly far superior) radio crew calling the game synced up with the video.

I got 18 and MLBTV isn't working. Rats.

Opening Day deserves something with more dignity than George Will. Like... the immortal Lee Elia, for instance. (NSFW)

It's apparently near freezing in Chicago (where my brother is at the Cubs game) but will be over 80 in Oakland (where I suspect my niece is at the As). Climate change isn't a thing, right.

GO TWINS!!!! They're opening the season in Milwaukee, but I will be in attendance for the home opener next week in beautiful, sunny, and maybe-temps-in-the-70's Minneapolis.

Radio crews are undeniably superior but even they are starting to follow the trend of letting the color override the play-by-play.

I'd tell you if "local" broadcasters are guilty of this, but I can't because I'm blacked-out.
In case, you know, I decide to take a lazy afternoon and drive 300 miles to see a game in person...

I mean it is George Will. He’s got questions in there about specific years that I would have no reason to know about, not just “all time” questions reaching back a long ways. But I do think it’s kind of fair game to go *pretty* niche to make the trivia hard. And I don’t really feel like talking about George Will one way or the other.

My Phillies beat the division champion Atlanta Baseball Team yesterday in extra innings. It was so great to see a smattering of real live fans in the seats.

Meanwhile, Justin Turner of the Dodgers, last seen endangering his teammates after going out on the field after a positive COVID-19 test to celebrate winning the World Series, robbed his teammate of a home run, and Fernando Tatis, Jr. demonstrated yet again that he is not of this planet.

And now, after all that excitement, MLB gives us a 7 game schedule for Friday. womp womp
