So, the moving-human-eye thing I'm not fond of, but I definitely like the idea of a camera that sort of behaves like a human gaze in its operation. Modest motion tracking that follows you a bit but lets you walk away, something that looks down or up at the ceiling when it's gaze isn't needed, something that has enough smarts to look at the person talking when there's more than one person using that machine on the call.

Reminds me a lot of Goldman Levin’s eye interactives, albeit to a slightly different end. This is a nice project but anything that wants to make us muse about being surveilled feels a few years (decades?) behind the times.

More practically, if you wanted to bring this to market I would embed the camera/tracker in a googly eye, surround it with some fake fur, and brand it as being very cute. I think that would actually do quite well.

Me after reading the comments in this thread, then clicking on the link: "Oh give me a break people on Metafilter exaggerate so much some times how bad could this possibly be OH HOLY SHIT I HATE IT SO MUCH!"

I think it would be perfectly fine, even a little fascinating, without the skin around it. But instead of looking like a camera with a human eyeball it looks like something grown in a lab and ethicists will debate for years whether or not killing it should be considered murder.

How about microphones that look like ears, complete with tiny hairs in the auditory canal to protect the sensitive bits from dust? Let's lean into this, people.

"We developed a webcam looking like a human eye."

Nnnnnnno, you didn't.

I hated it and loved it. (Odi et amo.) At first I thought it was just one of those overly-pretentious design projects that supposedly make us think about our relationship with technology but actually isn't that insightful, then about halfway through I decided it was definitely a parody of those videos, then at the end I thought maybe it was both? The subject matter of the video is firmly in the uncanny valley, but the format of the video itself somehow also found a way to live there.

Great post, best of the web.

Skin-on, by the same person, is also excellent. An input device designed to look and feel exactly like human skin.

The oog factor is exactly the point. But perhaps it would be better if everyone had a human-male-looking robot in a button down following us around, sitting next to us, peering over and making notes on a clipboard when we search for something.

That might bring the constant electronic surveillance more into perspective.

Louise is the girl with the perfect skin
She says, "Turn on the light otherwise it can't be seen"
She's got cheekbones like geometry and eyes like sin
And she's sexually enlightened by Cosmopolitan and

When she smiles my way
My eyes go out in vain
For her perfect skin
Yeah, that's perfect skin

That thing where you're going "this has to be a parody. This *has* to be a parody!" but you can't ever be sure because the world is weird now.
