Earl Simmons, the rapper known as DMX, died today after suffering a heart attack/drug overdose. He'll be known for his 'gruff delivery' as well as menacing snarl. He was 50.

X starred in a string of hits in the Nineties and Oughties, including X Gon' Give it To Ya, How's it Goin' Down, and Party Up, Up in Here.

Ah dang. I've always liked DMX because he can't sing for shit and I find that very relatable. I also liked that the two guys who found fame with their ash tray voices had beef.

People often say that with the right will/support/guidance, you can overcome anything.
Not true, in my opinion. You might live to see the other side of it but that doesn't always look like overcoming. Studies have shown that growing up with neglect, abuse and generational poverty changes people at the cellular level. We heard much of that pain in his music. Watched him struggle.

I believe he wanted to overcome, just couldn't get there. Sleep in Peace, Earl.

I have very mixed feelings about him (not his death, which is sad for all, obviously), because of his involvement with animal cruelty in the oughts. They dug up some dogs on his property; the story remains unclear (and the fact that Joe Arpaiao was the sheriff of course clouds everything), but it seems likely that he was involved in some way in dog fighting. That's the kind of thing I really have trouble getting over.

If there is one thing DMX should get ahead of his full stop it's his classic comment on everyone's favourite action star: "Steven Seagal is a fucking fuckhead. With spray-on hair".

He had some interesting views on the industry and powers that be in entertainment

Best amusement park rider ever. And proof that DMX was never not DMX.

One of my favorite happy tracks is the “clean” version of Party Up.

This extremely pure Twitter thread tells the story of DMX striking up a friendship with a technologist and her daughter during a flight. They end up part of his entourage for his concert that night.

This interview with GQ from a couple years ago is a good look at what DMX thought of his music - DMX Breaks Down His Most Iconic Tracks. And this twitter thread of his happier moments made me smile.

He'll be known for his 'gruff delivery' as well as menacing snarl.

What? I think he’ll more likely be remembered for his extensive musical career, where he was considered a pioneer of the genre, and in which he earned 3 Grammys and a host of other awards.

Plus a long film and TV career which, if not perhaps distinguished, was absolutely entertaining.

It seems churlish to reduce all that to ‘he seemed a bit angry’.

Also given how many black men are reduced to 'angry black man' it's a bit racist.

No celebration of DMX is complete without his off-the-dome rendition of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. There's also a more produced version.
