Queerantine & Lesbian TikTok

“Once I was in quarantine, I was just stuck in my own head with my own thoughts and I had to face it.”

It’s not just pandemic-enforced introspection, of course; it’s also the TikTok algorithm. And, because three articles definitively make a trend, here’s additional pandemic + lesbian TikTok testimony.

Now, lesbian TikTok is hardly new; the NYTimes trend piece - traditionally a lagging indicator - is almost a year old. TikTok has a reputation as a Gen Z-only platform, but if that’s not your scene, check out the #over30lesbians (and #over40lesbians, and #over50lesbians, etc) tags. Just ask one Redditor on r/latebloomerlesbians - “Lesbian TikTok changed my life.”

Lesbian TikTok is the absolute best! And then it turns into Lesbian Instagram where I spend more time anyway. I think the difference with the pandemic is more people like me downloaded TikTok for the first time.

I've seen this very thing happen so much in the last year. Lesbian tik tok even played a role in a few of them!

It's become fashionable lately to say social media has no redeeming qualities at all for our lives, but one thing that's really powerful is that it's allowed people to see inside queer culture in a way that you don't usually get to unless you're already a part of a queer community. And sometimes it turns out you're looking into a mirror.

I run a meetup group for LGBT+ women in Paris, and we've definitely had more signups over the last year. Pre pandemic we had tons of women joining who had realised they were queer in later life after a long hetero marriage, I'm glad to see these over 30s/40s/50s hashtags be so popular.
