Businesses in Christiansburg, Virginia, are embroiled in a sign war. [Roanoake Times]

The shenanigans have spawned a Facebook group so fans near and far can keep up with the latest developments, and have inspired at least two Ontario towns, Sarnia [Blackburn News] and Listowel [CTV News] to join in the fun.

Twitter hashtags: #signwar and #signwars

“And you’re seeing it now, you’re seeing some of these great chirps from local businesses and I’m glad that everyone is enjoying it.”

Is that a transcription error? Or is chirps a term that cool people are using (or cool Sarnians) that I am unaware of?

I went to college at Virginia Tech (Christiansburg is close enough to Blacksburg that there is a bus route that goes out to the mall there), and thus have patronized several of these establishments (especially Kabuki). A friend linked this to me and I was like "wait, I know these places!"

Is chirp meant to be distinct from tweet?

chirp is just another term for trash talking

"Chirp" is pretty common slang, especially in hockey culture and in places like Listowel (which is the basis of the show Letterkenny). It's nothing to do with Twitter.

stevil, it's valid slang (see the later definitions): https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=chirps

I clicked on the link expecting some people being angry at each other so I was delighted that it was just a bunch of people having fun.

Always exciting to see my hometown (Sarnia) make an appearance on the Blue.

Speaking as a person whose family is at least 75% from Southwest Virginia and 30% from Montgomery/Floyd County in particular since forever, I am always delighted when the region shines.

Nice work, probable cousins.

Up here in yankee territory we have a package store that fights amongst itself.
