Kaiju! Hee!

This year's song is better. Hope it wins. And not just because of Unexpected Giant Monster Suits.

...Possibly worth mentioning that the Eurovision first semifinal is tonight (here's the official livestream, starts in about an hour) and the finals are in 4 days, according to their website. Here's their live blog. I don't think Daði is on tonight, but maybe there'll be some other singers.

(I'm realizing that comment might seem snippy! Not meant that way, I just thought it was funny to not mention that the actual event is happening now. :-)

trig: Yup, they're in Semi-Final 2, on Thursday.

Feel like I framed this a bit too much about Eurovision, when these are both two quite decent synthpop songs that stand up on their own with their devo in sweatshirts / icelandic apathetic vibe. Especially “10 years” - songs about how long term relationships are going well seem kind of underrepresented in the world, and I’m happy to see the canon grow.

I am completely charmed by Daði Freyr and these dryly? humorous videos.

For those who enjoyed 10 years and wish to dance along, don't miss the helpfully detailed video tutorial:
"If you have a monster problem, this video is for you." "Very hip," in Daði's words.

Ooh and don't forget Where We Wanna Be.

The official YouTube stream has been geoblocked for people with IP addresses in the United States in the past (which isn't necessarily an indication it will be blocked this year) but thanks to a last minute deal US viewers can now stream the contest, including the semifinals, on Peacock. You'll need to register if you haven't, but they've said the free plan will be good enough and you won't need a premium plan. (I'm about to find out if this is true).

Like most Icelanders, I firmly believe that Think About Things would’ve won last year, and like most Icelanders, I’m mildly pessimistic this time around, even though 10 Years is wonderful.

Anyway, I’m happy enjoy this week either way. Eurovision is brilliant, partly because the structure forces the programmers to focus on the music, because there are just so many damn songs that they have no other option.

Given how much crap they cram in anyway (already we’ve been introduced to the official Eurovision 2021 dance crew), you know they’re itching to.

Nevermind, the songs have started. Oh, I like this Lithuanian song!

YAY IT’S ON

I'm only halfway through my workday so no Eurovision livestream for me, but I have Daði's Billie Eilish cover on repeat, so that's something.

Nevermind, the songs have started. Oh, I like this Lithuanian song!

My top picks (subject to revision) are Iceland, Lithuania, and Germany, solely based on which ones have gotten stuck in my head. (Occasionally a bit of the Czech Republic comes around too.)

My main source of information about the Eurovision contest was a Benny Hill episode that spoofed it. I was about ten years old when I saw this episode of Benny's, and I had no idea what the hell he was even spoofing—or if it was even a send-up of a Real Thing. That, and Abba.

I think that is getting added to my 22nd Anniversary Mixtape that I’ve been compiling for the Mrs.

It is absolutely heartbreaking that Iceland won't be able to perform live on stage. They're going to use a recording from their second rehearsal for the Semifinal on Thursday, and after that... we'll see.

The group has prepared consistently good music for both of these last contest cycles, and they were so excited for the opportunity. I wish them all the best, despite the devastating news.

Oh, this makes me sad. I was looking forward to seeing them perform. They all must be so disappointed. I've read interviews where Daði has said his whole goal was just to get to perform on the Eurovision stage as a finalist.

I love Daði's voice, especially how smooth his low notes are. And I wish I had known that in January he had been looking for people to send in their voices in to be part of the chorus part towards the end of "10 Years". It would've been fun to be part of a Eurovision song.

I haven't expected them to win this year (and as much as I loved "Think About Things", I don't think they would've won last year either), but if they can't perform live, then it'll be tough to get into the top 10, won't it?

They were so good! I guess the site they had to make your own sweatshirt crashed during the performance because everyone wants one.

Well, at least they were in the top 5, and his shows for later this year and next are pretty much sold out. I'm relieved that I was able to get a ticket for the NYC date!
