Matt LeBlanc tearfully: But I’m an Actor! I live in Los Angeles! The People of Ireland: No. Your name is Paudie. You live in Roscommon. You love Pints and GAA and you’re everyone’s uncle now.
The Friends reunion saw the return of some familiar characters, but none more familiar to Irish twitter than Matt LeBlanc, who is now as seen in these tweets, everybody's beloved ex-rugby captain, Guiness drinking farmer uncle. (Title nicked from this tweet)

Alt. thread reader links for "Matt LeBlanc tearfully," "as seen in these tweets" (full thread; I’m gonna make a thread of all of these as they’re hard to find via search and they’re all SO FUNNY) and "this tweet."

Funny (though I'm not watching the Friends reunion). Thanks, MartinWisse! Forwarding to Episodes fans.

These have been popping up on my twitter feed all weekend, brightening up my day. Some of them are really niche though.

I don't have an Irish uncle but I deeply appreciate how many of these show Irish Uncle Matt LeBlanc's cheerful if slightly bemused support of everyone's lifestyle choices.

This one in particular took me there. I can hear the football on the telly that he's insisted on putting on even though he's going to fall asleep in front of it, the slightly-too-strong tea in unfamiliar mugs, everyone waiting for the whole bit around 5PM where someone slaps their knees and says "right", which means "time to leave", then it takes another hour to actually get out of the house because everyone has to say goodbye and then get drawn into another conversation standing in the hall, and maybe have one last cup of tea and visit the loo before we go.

Ah jeez, I miss my family.

I could hear many of these more clearly in my imagination than I could remember any "Friends" dialogue. Joey, I think you need a dialect coach, because this works.

I demand LeBlanc join next season’s cast of Derry Girls as clueless uncle Joey from the states.

IANI or even Irish-American, but this is your Sunday afternoon reminder that my bog-standard VPN can get GAA streams from TG4 and yours probably can too--recommended for all of your hurling and football needs.

My Irish wife has been sharing these with me all weekend and it’s been great craic.

I second!

How would an Irish uncle say, “How you doin’?”

"How you gettin' on?"

actually stolen from one of the tweets

It's weird how these are adorable even if you're American and have no freaking clue what is going on.

It's funny how periodically Twitter gets funny and weird and delightful, and you remember that it hasn't always been people screaming at each other about rising fascism.

I think this is my favourite so far. He’s also been dubbed Mattie Bán by Marian Keyes. (Bán is the Irish for white.)

but I deeply appreciate how many of these show Irish Uncle Matt LeBlanc's cheerful if slightly bemused support of everyone's lifestyle choices

I really love this aspect of it - the impression that he’s doing his best, even if he’s not getting it quite right, and his heart’s definitely in the right place. (Also, I just realised that I’ve already started having these type of conversations with my older niblings, though in my case I’m so far mostly not understanding the intricacies of Minecraft or YouTube drama.)

I love that "I have identified my uncle" is a thing I've seen multiple cultures do on Twitter now.

I'm pretty sure this one is my favorite. The "standing at the bar having a convo" pose is perfect.

When I watched the reunion with my wife I said to her "Who'd have thought Joey would end up being the wizened elder statesman of the Friends cast?"

I guess the answer is all of Ireland.

This is also a real type of guy, although less charming. He's stereotypically from Southie (before it was gentrified) and has crap opinions.

I love this meme. It is absolutely the sort of guy that we met as friends of friends or just as friendly strangers in Ireland.
