Oof, I thought that said Robert Downey Jr, and suddenly realized I care a lot more about Robert Downey Jr.'s health than I ever realized.

A truly brilliant, rules-challenging filmmaker. Putney Swope, in particular, was nothing less than revolutionarily eye-opening for me as a young cinephile.

Downey's influence on American cinema is, secretly, very strong - and it goes beyond the loving references to his work in Paul Thomas Anderson's filmography. He bridged counterculture and mainstream culture in unexpected, fresh, challenging ways.

I haven't watched his films in some time, so I'm curious how their politics hold up these days.

A double feature was playing In a DC cinema around 1970, for months, "Putney Swope" with Haskell Wexlar's Medium Cool. I myself wasn't cool enough to see either one of these films until many years later.
