Cat-Scan.com is one of the strangest sites I've seen in some time. I have no idea how these people got their cats wedged into their scanners, or why.

I just went back and realized something: although the original cat-scan.com post was from July 1999, the first comment ("does anyone read the posts down here?") is from October 2000! The comments that always get memed make so much more sense to me now, understanding that the discussion was taking place on a post that was already quite old and (I assume) could only be reached after scrolling for a bit, hence the "down here" and the various "i do"s.
Anyway, I'm a newcomer to mefi so maybe this is common knowledge; I just found it interesting :)

As I have gotten older I believe I have found out what Crockety Bloat actually even is and I have discovered that it isn't good.
I find that it can be summoned with a really greasy plate of bar nachos after too many margaritas, staying up past your bedtime and forgetting to drink enough water.
Also I'm kind of wishing I had a scanner available, but I can't even remember the last time I used a scanner and I know there isn't one in the house. And I don't have any idea where our cranky old house cat is and I don't think she'd be into being wedged into a scanner anyway. And, well, I've already seen my doctor twice this month and I'm ready for a break.

Man, I made that fake new scanned cats page and it's been like ten years? and hence long enough for me not to be sure whether the webring links I'd made at the bottom actually went to, like, other cat scan pages other MeFites had made, and I'm a little sad to report that they don't.

It's really frightening to contemplate how much of the past 21 or 22 years (I don't remember exactly when I started lurking) I've spent reading Metafilter. I'm sure it's disturbingly high on the list of things I've spent conscious hours doing over that time period. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Holy crap, I just realized my 20th anniversary was 4 days ago! So ~30% of my life rounded to the nearest integer. A 30% well spent, except perhaps for some of the limericks early on.
As I think I’ve mentioned before, I cheated to get signed up. I had lurked for what seemed forever but was probably around a year when sign-ups were frozen and I panicked. But if you signed up for some coding contest that was in some way related to MetaFilter in a way I can’t recall, a membership was yours. So I signed up for that (with nothing approaching the skills to even pretend to compete) and here I am.

When TechTV had those computer dorks on in the afternoon (Eastern time) they once had a countdown of the best websites and number 1 was this monster and I was like, wtf is a meta filter and by the time it occurred to me to actually get a membership the mathowie character had pretty much shut that down until aught four

As always, a day late. Hugs for everybody! I just rehooked up my scanner and it occurs to me that I have not yet scanned my current cat. I'll need to step over to the Green and ask how I can get him wedged into my scanner.
In MetaRelated News, I was using $20SAIT as my password to log on for state unemployment but they notified me today that my payments have expired (thanks to fuckface governor for rejecting any more federal money. So I changed my password and logged out for the last time.
And YES, as I've said for years, I am still reading the comments

My cat was run over by a car a couple of months ago (he's recovering very nicely) and everyone around me got sick of my jokes about how my we'd had a cat cat scan. No pics, unfortunately.

Holy shit, I am on my 3rd set of cats now with Metafilter. (the right one is "Kit", ie Kit-Kat -- at a certain age, the kids get to name the cats -- the left one is "Olivia" and quickly we referred to her as "Ollie" -- turns out 70% of orange tabbys, ours included, are male, so now he's "Oliver", but really still "Ollie" and both "he/him" and "she/her" are regularly applied to him/her, which is cool because my kids are growing up in a world where what you're assigned at birth doesn't necessarily jive with your pronouns and they are totally comfortable with that, but now we have this pronoun conundrum which is only complicated by the fact he/her is losing his/her testicles next week and he/her seems to have zero gender identity that we can discern and I am about to post an AskMe that will be quickly deleted).
Irregardless, I'm not going to beg the question and want to say that I am literally exploding with happiness to say that both cats still have claws and foreskins and I am still here though not commenting or posting as frequently as before. Still the best $5 I've ever spent and currently the best monthly subscription money I send out. I ate it. I dumped the MF. I got therapy. I quit the job. I saw my doctor. And you *are* my lawyer.
Also, there is literally someone who just signed up who is younger than the site. How fucking crazy is that?

I came across Metafilter a couple of months after the cat scan post so first read it retrospectively, but I always remember it as the first post I read. Metafilter was the first website I visited where I felt I had found people like me. I've never posted and comment rarely but I am still here after nearly 22 years (though not with my original username)
