You can find plenty of free audiobooks at LibriVox (related AskMes),
and Phoebe Judge is still bringing her fine podcasting voice to Phoebe Reads A Mystery, one chapter of a book every day,
and now (hooray!) Nate DiMeo of The Memory Palace has jumped onto the bandwagon with a three-part reading of The Great Gatsby.
Part One 🍸 Part Two 🍸 Part Three

I just finished listening to DiMeo's reading of Gatsy. It is a worthwhile experience--hadn't occurred to me that the book could be read aloud in such a compact amount of time. Maybe he can narrate Ducks, Newburyport next.

I listen to loads of audiobooks, mostly through my library and some through libro.fm, but I'd never heard of LibriVox. Thanks for this post! I just finished my most recent audiobook - might download something to listen to with this weekend's yardwork. There's an English version of Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Thief, and I was sad not to find a library copy available after I watched the recent Omar Sy adaptation.

Volunteer narration is such a cool idea, but it seems like it would be a ton of work. I am self conscious about my voice (which is somehow both squeaky and hoarse simultaneously, heh) but even if I loved to hear myself talk, committing to narrating a novel seems daunting.

When I was a kid though, I had two camp counselors who were best friends (or maybe more, I was eight, I didn't think about it much) and one of them made a homemade audiobook of The Princess Bride for the other. On cassette tapes! (I am that many years old.) To this day, that is my gold standard grand gesture. If you ever betray me or break my heart, let it be known that a recording me a version of Watership Down or The Westing Game would get you out of any dog house.

The Memory Palace is often an exercise in going from zero to ugly-crying about lead poisoning victims in the 1910's in under ten minutes, so I'm not sooo surprised that he can get through Gatsby efficiently.

I would recommend anything by Peter Yearsley. His King in Yellow is sad and haunting.

I have been working my way through Phoebe Judge reading The woman in white and on the whole she does a great job, but there are times I have yelled aloud as she mispronounces English words and names (Lye-chester, Poss-till-thwaite, Tor-kay and of course "clerk" instead of "clark"). Although I like both her and PG Wodehouse, I am not game to listen to her reading his work aloud. It would be excruciating. I wish she would read more out-of-copyright US authors.

Nate DiMeo reading Gatsby would be great though, thanks for the tip! Now we just need Roman Mars to start reading things aloud too...

Nate DiMeo reading Gatsby is indeed sublime - he just sounds so much like Nick Carraway oughta. Highly recommend!

I enjoyed Nate DiMeo's reading a lot! It's actually the second time I've listened to it read aloud--the last was narrated by Jake Gyllenhaal, and it was excellent too. An Audible exclusive, however.
