There's an old xkcd that mentions the mashup titles I Wish That Stacy's Mom Had Jessie's Girl and When You Come On Eileen I Touch Myself. Not so good in reality, it seems -- like a lot of ML projects it's way better than you would have expected from a computer but also far short of what you would expect from a human.

An experiment in Great Weird Curvy Science that maybe didn't come out optimally but is surprisingly listenable. Also it took two six-minute tracks and created something 3 minutes long out of them, so naturally some of the bits and pieces got left back in the pots and pans. The hands that guide it are invisible… Is it real? It's "my" creation, moving by remote control.

I am, however, the first person to think of the oddly effective REM/Queen mashup 'My One Religion the Dust'

And, because I haven't given up on that match-the-break-to-the-sample-flip approach, Billy Joel x Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - 'Houston in the Riches'. Oh, no. I am very impressed by this thing's ability to sync up a drop well. In terms of effective song combos, things with similar tempos/rhythmic feel and that aren't harmonically complex work well together. In this case, Sandstorm and Party Rock Anthem have about the same tempo and get most of their interest from syncopation rather than chord progression, so the system has an easy time mashing them together.

It's funny: those two meshed almost seamlessly, but this is the first time I've really had my attention drawn to the difference between the production values when you jump only 15 years or so. It sounds like you're listening to FM radio or a cassette one second, and then clear crisp CD sound bounces in at just the right time and tempo and it's like being in the Wizard of Oz, you know the part when the color comes in after the tornado?

I tried all three versions I know of Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Behind the Mask":
YMO x Greg Phillinganes - works fairly well
YMO x Eric Clapton - a mess mostly but has its moments
Eric Clapton x Greg Phillinganes - matching overlap in some parts; counter in others.

It's interesting the decisions the algorithm makes, not just in this example but all over, when it comes to which song it shifts in pitch or tempo. It at least makes for some cool helium-voice moments.

Mashing up two covers works perfectly sometimes:
Rolling Stones + Ananda Shankar
The Sea and Cake + David Bowie

But sometimes it whiffs an easy pitch:
Joy Division + NIN
Commodores + Faith No More
Huey Lewis + Exile
Status Quo + CBV

I think the algorithm prefers not to overlap vocals, so maybe that's why it tends to be off by a measure or two.

(The Sun Always Shines Blue On Monday doesn't really attempt to combine the songs at all, so it kind of works but not as a mashup; the wheels come off Elvira Always Shines On T.V. very quickly though the beginning is promising; Shines like The Wolf On T.V. is a mess from start to finish.)

It's not that Nothing Compares 2 What's On Your Mind (Pure Energy) (Information Society and Sinead O'Connor) works exactly, it's less of a mess than I expected it would be when I threw them together.

When the vocals are coming from O'Connor and not Information Society, one can hear a pathway by which someone could reach an extended club dance mix of "Nothing Compares 2 U." If such a thing were desirable.

Which it almost certainly isn't.

I'm Gonna Get You (Bizarre Inc)

and was surprised by how badly most of them worked. I'm really impressed with RobotVoodooPower for even half-successfully combining En Vogue with anything. (My titles, on the other hand, were all great.)
