The Fart Pedal

It's fairly common in pedals to have a wet/dry control, but this might be the best use of one.

It wasn't on Superfuzz Bigmuff, sadly, but Mudhoney has paddled down this river before.

But my playing already stinks.

I should mention that I think this review really gets to the bottom of why this might be successful.

So the videos of the guy playing are fake right? Or does this pedal not allow very precise control of the gassy sounds?

I assume that any incoming signal is just triggering random fart sounds. You play, you get some farts. you stop playing, and the farts stop.

I'm glad the reviewers enjoyed the surprise but I admit I am sad the fart noises are not tuned to the input. A real missed opportunity for some puns here, like 'Fartier transforms.'

Yeah I was assuming it would give you some control over pitch/dynamics based on input... random fart sounds isn't nearly as fun.

I'm pretty sure Metafilter has a general policy against linking Kickstarters, and I'm pretty sure this is the perfect exception to be allowed to stand.

For added verisimilitude.

I know this guy! He's a friend of my brother's wife. Good guy. Haven't met in person but I've met him online. He always has interesting projects and videos.

Shouldn't be that hard, guitars only have like six strings each tuned and fingered while played. Just throw a FFT at it to pick out the six frequencies, take them though some e to the minus i tau to map them to modulo ranges that fit the inputs of your fart generation circuitry. A strum sets the basic parameters then slide and pluck to modify the sound to your heart's desire.

I didn't think the video was that helpful because you can't really tell what the guitar was actually playing, and it wasn't just the guitar feed there were like cymbals in there which came through rather clear. How would one know that what the guitar was playing did or didn't control the final sound?

Or it could just be a box that filters out guitar and plays random fart sounds. Guess somebody will have to take one apart to find out.

Although it does seem like a...safer way to gamble on a fart, so to speak.

I don't know. Watching that guy jam, and having the sound be so asynchronous was pretty hilarious. Gives new meaning to "shred".

Weird. I just saw this video yesterday, and I assumed it was going to be the same video, but it wasn't. Now I'm wondering how many farty guitar videos there are in the world and realizing it's probably a lot more than I would have expected.

If I plug my bass into it can I play the brown note?

My first thought after watching the video was "scam/performance art project," so I still can't tell if this thing is actually real or if everyone who orders one is getting a box full of rocks that doesn't do anything it promises to do, or indeed output any kind of sound at all.

I am so getting this. I somehow have a feeling that jscalzi has already ordered a prototype.

Maybe I've watched way too many Cronenberg films, but I'm imagining a bunch of unsettling scenarios around what lurks inside.

Look Mum No Computer made a synth that actually makes farting sounds.

I'm mainly worried that if I open the chassis of that pedal it'll tell me it's my case officer.

honestly kind of upset that it just seems to play random fart noises rather than actually adapting the audio played into it in some way

Too bad Eddie's not around to see the Brown Sound finally perfected. Would love to hear this thing do an Eruption. I mean, this is Mean Streaks. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
