#striketober international

#striketober isn't just for the US. Half a million workers in South Korea are prepared to stage a one-day general strike.

A spreadsheet in China has gone viral documenting the brutal work hours of workers in tech companies. Thousands of UK workers across 150 universities are voting on strikes over pay, pension, and working conditions. Bus companies in the UK are also facing strike action. Oil workers across Iran have been continuing their strikes for better pay and conditions since March 2021. Previously.

I just read on Reddit about a potential walk out in the US on Black Friday for retail etc jobs. This may be becoming a major global movement.

Happy to see this post right after ticking YES/YES on the strike ballots that just came in the post!

I work in a UK university; I think this'll be strike number 4 for me since 2017 and I for one will be voting yes in any strike ballot on any issue until every last tuition-fees-charging REFing-and-TEFing educational instrumentalist managerialist bureaucratic agent of the University Destruction Experiment throws up their hands, departs for the private sector, and leaves people who actually give a fuck about the core institutional mission to pick up the pieces after what I gather is several decades of disastrous university "reform".

I have some doubts about whether this ballot is going to make it over the legally-mandated 50% turnout threshold (because a lot of more securely-employed academics are placid, conflict-averse weirdos who labour under the delusion that their employers respect them). But something has to give in the UK university sector. It feels like almost every day brings a fresh farce.

busted_crayons, thanks for letting us know what's going on in the UK. I really hope things work out. It seems like things are shifting, and I hope they shift for the better for everyone.
