Yeah, very similar to this slightly later Cambridge & Paul Instrument Company Cylindrical Reflecting Vertical Galvanometer.

That sounds like the sort of story worth preserving. Of course, I may just be saying that as it is the sort of thing that comes up regularly in my TTRPG campaign (group includes a fire mage and a pyromaniac dwarven combat engineer).
