I’m too young to remember. Was Bob Saget actually a dirty comic before Full House, or was that an ironic pivot? It just seems that bland, boring ABC wouldn’t have taken the chance that some TGIF viewers may have gone to a comedy club and been familiar with his routine.

Dirty before. Yup. Somehow that happened. The late 80s and early 90s was a wild wild place.

Just re watched honey I shrunk the kids with my kids. Their children go missing for like six hours. No one is alarmed. “They’re probably at the mall” only at dusk are they calling the cops who roll in annoyed as hell to be interrupted by not one but TWO missing kid calls.

Ya. Wild times.

"Be back by the time the sun goes down" was supposed to mean "in time for dinner", but in the summertime....

PS. There was no such thing as an ironic pivot back then either.

Dude had to pay the bills! Every actor knew the show was saccharine but can’t argue with a paycheck; as their target audience I thought the show was terrible but there was nothing else available so…

Saget & Oliver. Like musicians, they traded riffs with impeccable timing and unexpected intimacy. Saget was likable, and he made me laugh.

Oliver was, well, Oliver. I was glad to see him interact with Saget, as it seemed to calm him down. Watching his regular shows, I often wanted to hug him, and tell him "There there, Jon, it's going to be okay."

the two things are separate in every way, but if you squint hard in a dark room and look backwards at "Bojack Horseman" you might catch a glimpse of something faintly Saget-ish in some of those episodes.

something about that mix of deep pathos, deeper flaws, and funnier than hell

Holy Christ I thought I loved Bob Saget before?!? This interview is everything I was promised about him other than what I saw in The Aristocrats. Thank you so much for this.
