Do You Remember

The Chickasaw Mudd Puppies were a music duo from Athens, Georgia. In 1990-91, they released an EP and two albums, White Dirt and 8 Track Stomp, produced by bluesman Willie Dixon and REM's Michael Stipe (he also sings on 8 Track Stomp's closer, 'Words and Knives.') They made two videos, for 'McIntosh' and 'Do You Remember,' played on Canada's answer to MTV, MuchMusic, and made a cover of CCR's 'Lodi' a staple of their live sets.

Despite Stipe's co-sign, they didn't sell many albums or attract a lot of attention outside Athens, and they broke up. While singer/harpist/washboard player Brant Slay worked in forestry and conservation, singer/guitarist Ben Reynolds went on to a career in art photography. When their song 'Chickenbone' was used in the 2011 Jason Statham vehicle The Mechanic, they reunited, added a drummer, and played at 2011's South By Southwest festival.

I saw then open for Drivin' N Cryin' at Six Flags in Atlanta in 1990 or 91, I think. I remember they delayed the show due to lightening, and we got soaked, but it was a fabulous show. One of my favorite DnC shows ever, and I've seen them 20+ times.

Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time.

In about 1992 I got tickets to a double bill The Feelies and Firehose at The Barrymore in Madison WI. That alone would have been a hell of a show, both fanbases clad in the Flannel Flag, one chill, one punk. BUT, there was a surprise third act: The Chickasaw Mudd Puppies! Two-piece band, a guitar on full distortion and a guy in a big chair on a platform that played harmonica and stomped for percussion. They rocked! At one point a guy shouted from the audience "I have all your albums!" and harmonica guy shouted back "no you don't," and the guy in the crowd shouted "yes I do they both fit on one side of a 90 minute cassette tape!" and the harmonica guy says "yeah, I guess you do have all of our albums." I went out and bought both White Dirt and 8 Track Stomp after that, and got much enjoyment from both.

A personal fave from 8 Track Stomp: Jambalaya

I loved them back in the day, never got to see them live. I seem to recall Danny Barnes of The Bad Livers telling a story about being on tour with them and by the end of the tour they would only speak to each other via other people. Nice to hear they're getting along better now.

In my teens, one of my favorite ways of discovering new music was buying random CDs of bands that I had never heard of from the discount bin of my local music shop. That's how I learned about the Chicksaw Mudd Puppies - probably the best thing I ever pulled out of that bin. Great stuff.
