"What do you say when a guy walks up to you, stares squarely into your light brown eyeballs and says: 'Buddy, man will never fly!'" The Man Will Never Fly Memorial Society was founded in 1959 to combat the global conspiracy that claims human flight has happened.

(I also note that there's some evidence that a parody presentation in 1969 may have played a part in sincere moon landing hoax belief. I really hoped to include that, but all the links are paywalled and quite thin.)

That should be "Kelly Weill's book." Even when I'm looking at a name while typing it, I usually get it wrong. Sorry.

I, for one, am quite impressed with the secret technology by which they moved me between Melbourne and London within 24 hours without my ever leaving the ground. Either that or angry at the Illuminati for covering up the fact that I could have made the trip myself on a bicycle within a long weekend.

> In 1966, when the state supreme court made drinking in public illegal, the society went so far as to threaten to relocate. [...] That year, the group also changed its motto to “Birds fly, men drink (but it ain’t easy in North Carolina).”

the society shares similar goals and values as intervarsity darts leagues

1959 is also a key year in the Birds Aren’t Real chronology.

Bird's *aren't* real. Those feathered things flapping around out there? They're just dinosaurs.

There are no multistory buildings. Other "floors" are parallel universes. "Stairs" and "ramps" are easily understood as just space warps that are powered by kinetic motion. "Elevators" are merely motorized space warps. Simply put, an "airplane" is merely an oversized glorified elevator.

This story of this book shamelessly flies in the face of the fact that man has never printed!

I see that you too have been fooled into thinking there's no human flight. But the truth is right there in the slogan "Birds fly, men drink." It's not that airplanes don't exist. It's that men don't fly the planes. All pilots are women and non-binary people.

Look, you can pretend you inhabit a reality with as many dimensions as you want, but at the end of the day, it's all encoded on a single continuous tape in a Turing machine.

don't forget the odd windows and the eyedrops they sneak on you when you're not looking - my sight was so messed up that every time i looked out, it really DID look like i was way up in the sky looking down

how tricky of them

Fixed the name, fly on.

The name has not been fixed, as Weill is misspelled "Weil".

They do directly link to the Ninety-Nines on their site, so you may be on to something. (But, I'm not going to refer to any pilots as birds. Both for ethical reasons, and 'cause I expect I'd get boxed on the ears for being rude, or worse.)

The truth, of course, is always in the second-to-last paragraph:

If you want to know the truth of why this organization was formed, I can tell you in three words. We were lonesome.

Now that may also be meant tongue in cheek, but it seems the core of so many conspiracy-based social groups, with the internet only serving as rocket fuel for those connections in our day and age. Add in a little context collapse and poof! Hey presto, the phrase “tongue in cheek” is suddenly lost….

This is why we need the ironics typeface once proposed by HL Mencken (or Bernard Levin? or Tom Driberg?). The idea has an interesting history.

Ironics typeface - fascinating article, Paul Slade! (1) Does anyone know of a way to do a backslant font in web postings such as this page? Not as an image or PDF but as a font or font effect. Right, not the spirit of html, but still.... (2) Does any language or culture have a way to distinguish sarcasm from irony? Recently I was accused of sarcasm when I mildly intended just to observe an irony.

I had a completely sincere moment of dread thinking this was going to be the next thing that we were all going to have to fight about online. It was like when my coworker had a dream about a nailshower (where roofing nails came down from the sky) and a little part of my brain went, "shit, climate change has gotten really bad."

Airplanes actually drive through secret underground tunnels and all the windows are just tv screens to trick you planes aren't real - Ross Pal

Stephen Fry once told the story of taking a commercial flight in Australia where the the pilot announced they were ready to depart by saying: "It's time to move some service down the aisles and some scenery past the windows".

A number of Tumblr and Discord communities have taken to tone indicators and use /s (sarcasm), /j (joking), /hj (half joking), /rh (rhetorical), /f (fake), /g (genuine), etc… but I don’t think I’ve ever seen an /i, which means you could probably make it happen!

My place of work has tons of elevators. Around the time I started working there, I have often wondered...... what if it was the elevators that were stationary and the building moved up and down? I had thoughts of a stranger in a strange land story where someone is plucked from our world and placed in that one. The pluckee is gobsmacked. The gumshoe they follow around is just inured to it all, as one would be having seen it all their life.

This is exactly as far as I've come in the story and it's free for anyone to do with as they will. Bonus points if you share it with me.
