Leonard Nimoy's Photography - classic black and white photos - very chic. (Is there anything he DOESN'T do? Besides not eat enough salsa?)

Leonard is one talented guy {grin}.... but uhh, this isn't much more than amateur work at best... to me.

Probably it's easier to get women to take off their clothes for your camera if you're a Vulcan.

lelilo: Funny, I always suspected George Takei was the smooth one on the old enterprise.

Witty, just wondering on what you base your assessment. Care to clarify?

So that's what Vulcan pr0n looks like? Bo-ring. Wulfgar!, I agree with Witty, on the basis that the photographs are generally poorly composed and the subject matter is limited. Also, from what I can tell on a screen, the shots are technically competent but nothing more. Anyone with a halfway decent auto-everything SLR could have taken them. Besides, "the female presence of god" is a feeble excuse for a few nudie pics. I think this link should have had a NSFW rating -- try convincing your boss those pics are art not pr0n..

Some of the images are terrible scans - or could even the printer's fault (eg. 1, eg. 2).

Witty's assesment is based on the fact that it's not very imaginative work, not very well lighted, and the grainy look has been done much better a million times.

Nudes are very difficult because, among other reasons, everybody with a camera has shot at least one nude. Check out Weston's nudes, or Mapplethorpe's.

Nowadays, a pretty good shooter is Robert Maxwell (he often uses ambrotype, a Civil War technique with wet glass plates)

Check out nerve.com any given week, you'll find professional nudes which are much more interesting than Nimoy's, for example Aufray's stuff or Ockenfels's.

Elinor Carucci usually photgraphs herself in the nude. (this last link is Flash, slow loading)

I love the big ears, and I don't want to fuck with a Vulcan, but as a photographer Nimoy is an advanced amateur at the most

That hit counter is way tacky. I think he should stick to music videos.

Besides, one of the hand series has the live long and prosper gesture going on. Give the guy some points for having a sense of humor, at least, if not for knowing how to work a light-meter.

matteo: Elinor Carucci's work is great. Similar subject matter to some of Nan Goldin's work, but very nicely done.

Ahh.. I thought she looked familiar - she also has a nerve gallery. Good link.

Unfortunately, Nimoy's books of poetry (many of which also showcased his photographs) are all out of print. Shame. They're quite something.

I find the picture for the cover interesting. The woman is wearing phylacteries The wearing of them during prayers is traditionally associated with men. She is being bound by leather as a liberating spiritual act. It may be cheap, obvious or amateurish but it is creating (at least for me) a dialogue about sex and religion. Which can be fun. I have to agree with the majority of opinions here:
The photographs are amateur, uninspired, and marked by artifice and melodrama.
And that image with the nude and the tefillin is a bit much; it whacks me over the head with symbolism. Ouch.
