It's really worth reading this one. High art.

E.g. responses 1,2 .

Also the account only posted this "taters?" story and that's it.

I would have just pooped on a plate and served it to the kid for dessert. "Do you know what this is?"

Is this something I'd need to know what a potato is to understand?

I applaud this level of commitment to being a shit disturber. Having done similar things in my past, and coming from a culture where we do this sort of thing all the time, it will often lead to hilarious results (and also rage). Its my Ask vs Guess culture thing - you get it or don't or it pisses you off.

Reddit’s a total asshole about not being logged in or using the app on mobile, specifically (desktop doesn’t do this). Just change the www -> to “old” in the URL.

Or tell your phone browser to show the desktop site is how I got to see it.

No hardcore taters for this one!

What I love about this is how "..an idea slapped my mind" which "backfired in my face".
Having been slapped many times in my mind, I can relate in parallel. Having been backfired in my face too, I rotate in sympathy.

Is this potato week now?

At least now we know what to do when FPPs start dropping off.

(Opens in private tab for me.)

I mean, Metafilter, too, has been in the awkward situation of not knowing exactly what taters are.

The courage to go all in on a joke has to be admired but potatoes are an odd hill to be sacrificing a relationship on.

I'm now thinking fondly of a dinner I had with a Scottish friend and his father, visiting from Glasgow, who over dinner proceeded to discuss potatos and their appropriate pairing in cuisine for 30 minutes straight without interruption, including a comically shocked recitation of the time my friend's mother put red potato slices in the salad, which are obviously far too waxy, and nearly led to a church-granted anullment.

The spectrum from ignorance to connoirseureship is broad, is all I'm saying.

As many of us do, I sometimes wake up at around 3am haunted by my life choices and predicting doom about every conceivable detail. Other times, I wake up around 3am and think of something funny and can't go back to sleep because I can't stop giggling about the funny thing. This is one of those funny things and I will be struggling to keep the grin off of my face during the marathon of stand up meetings this morning. At least the struggle will prevent me from falling asleep on camera.

My ex wife's parents decided when she was born that they were going to teach her the word "apple" for an onion and "onion" for an apple. Merrily she went until about the 4th grade when she was at a friend's house and the mother asked if she wanted a slice of apple. She wondered who would eat a slice of apple (onion). Then it came out on a plate. My ex blurted out, "That's not an apple, that is an onion." Hilarity ensued when her friend's mother tried to figure it out and called ex wife's mom who explained the whole thing. Depending on your point of view, it was either a great long game gag or an epic fail.

If someone asked my ex what a potato is, she would believe them in a heartbeat.

Andy Riley's book of Great Lies To Tell Small Kids is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.

There's one lie in there about how a new Sun goes over the sky every day, and the old ones pile up behind those hills over there, and after they cool down men go back there and cut them into blocks and that's where we get margarine from.

I told that one to little ms flabdablet when she was still tiny ms flabdablet, and was horribly ashamed to find out from her that she'd actually never questioned it until she was at least 15. She says she's never going to forgive me for that and frankly I deserve not to be.

Seriously?
Short version--

Mom the cook: "Try it, you'll like it."
Boyfriend quote: "Taste's very strange!"
Mom the cook: "Eh, eat something else then."
