Hybrid Bharatham EPISODE 5 | Usha Jey Choreography #HybridBharatham is my way of switching between Hip-Hop and Bharathanatyam, 2 dances that I love, learn and respect. My aim is to keep the essence of each dance and create something that do justice to who I am. posted by Gorgik (10 comments total) 20 users marked this as a favorite

I looooooove this! For some reason their eyes and facial expressions got me - vital to their dance, really joyous

Cultural appropriation in the best way! Everyone should dance, however they can, in every way they can. There was a dance party outside after a local porchfest, cajun style, really fun, (not enough dancing, mostly toddlers and moms and a few older women and that couple that did a swing class:-) really pleasant. So this older greek guy I know comments and I say you should've got out there and dance, his response gives me pause, he said "no no 'throat-grumble', no grr I can't do that, I can do zorba-style, but that's crazy dancing" .. so .. dance is learned cultural movement, huge social constraints, expressive yet intrinsically ritualized. How do we get everyone dancing?

Dance like no one can see you.

As a Twitter reply mentions, note:
how they used their fourth dancer, the camera 🎥.
Watch it one more time, noticing when the camera moves, how it moves, and when it stops. Then imagine what this video would look like from a stationary tripod. These pros know the diff.

Paying explicit respect and *engendering respect* by naming dance forms, naming teachers…. how powerful it is that I now know “Barathanatyam”, instead of just guessing “Indian classical dance” (which would be inaccurate to its origin anyways!), that she lifts up the name of her hip-hop teacher (Kanon Ghetto-style). And this, from the linked Indian Express article: “If I choose a dance, I have to really take time to understand the background of these forms. It takes time to learn about history… These two cultures are really close to my heart and putting them together is a representation of my life.”

it's a clip that can be watched over and over, focusing each time on a different part; the eyes, the movements, the way they use their feet... now I get to watch it again paying attention the the camera movement!
