Have the Courage to Listen

Dave Isay talks about StoryCorps and shares three heartfelt true stories. Since 2003, StoryCorps has made more than half a million audio recordings of people's conversations and memories for the Library of Congress. In the talk Isay also shares his newest initiative One Small Step, that he sees as critical to getting through the polarization crisis brought by "the hate industrial complex".

Selected Stories from StoryCorps

Piloted in 2018 and launched in 2021, One Small Step brings strangers together for a conversation about their lives–not about politics. Each conversation is archived at the Library of Congress and a small number of interviews are edited into short audio and animated stories that showcase the impact of One Small Step.

One Small Step is based on contact theory, which states that a meaningful interaction between people with opposing views can help turn “thems” into “us-es.” One Small Step’s scientific and systematic approach is supported by a group of advisors that includes social scientists, researchers, and psychologists.

Today I learned (by visiting their website) that all the StoryCorps conversations are auto-transcripted and are entirely searchable by content. I searched for "Fred" and got a bunch of conversations in which Fred is somewhere mentioned. That's pretty amazing. I don't know how fancy the search tools are, but it seems you might be able to tease out some pretty remarkable common threads across people with the right search terms.

why Fred tho?

It seemed like a generic word to search? It's also my Starbucks name.

A few years ago my sister pulled my Dad into a StoryCorps booth for a 40 minute conversation. That recording is at this point my favorite family document - a perfect encapsulation of their relationship. If they come to your town, can’t recommend it enough.

I've been using their app to records my parents' stories--how they met, growing up on a farm in PA, etc--both for me and my kids. It's great.
