O hey! This looks like a good spot to talk about my current project!

Duting the most recent edition of Bornhack, which was otherwise quite excellent, Stoneshop and I found out that for various reasons, tent camping is not really a comfortable option for us anymore. So, after a bad night, we searched for other ways to camp that would work better.
We did not want a camper van (too spendy and just too clumsy in several ways), and I vetoed a caravan (too large to drive around with, or too small for comfort, can even be both). First we considered a Rapido (folding caravan) but soon we found out that there was such a thing as a CombiCamp. The fact that they're Danish, and we want to go camping in Denmark, seemed like a pointer.

Now these things are pretty neat. While driving, they're a small trailer; low, lightweight, and you can put things like bicycles on the top. When you arrive, you unfold the legs, then open the trailer and unfold the tent... it opens to twice the floor space of the trailer. Your bed is in the trailer, so it's already made and a very decent size. It's also at a normal bed height which is quite comfortable.
The lid of the traller becomes the floor of the sitting area. You can go to bed right away without needing to do anything complicated.
The next day or whenever, you can put up the awning, which doubles the floor space. It has removable walls so it can be as open or closed as you like.
Another point in their favour: CombiCamp trailers can be stored on their side. If you are lucky enough to have the space, you can just stick them in the garage at home.

So once home, we set out to buy one. And we found one from 1994 that needed small repairs and cost < 300€. We liked what we saw, we took it home.

And now I'm happily making those small repairs. I found and bought a 160x220 cm mattress and slatted bed frames to match. I enlarged the inner tent to fit the new bed. I replaced missing zipper pullers, and added loops for hanging up lights and other small conveniences. And I found a sprayable fabric paint that I'm using to restore the original, very much faded beige & maroon color scheme.

I'm very much looking forward to using this thing!

So to build on Too-Ticky's discussion of new living arrangements, I just had an offer accepted on a new house! It has a big back deck that directly looks out over a little lake, and more rooms than I know what to do with. (OK, it's still a very small house but I'm moving from a very very small house!)

If there are any MeFites in Burke, VA, well, now there will be one more!

Also - OHMIGOD moving is SO HARD. I am so empathetic of all of the moving questions I've seen on Ask MeFi over the years. This shiz is EXHAUSTING. My spoons are practically non-existent at this point and I feel like my brain is working with a single chopstick. The only way out is through!

I just launched my device halfway across the room due thanks to the friendly little spider who drifted down to say hello while I was reading. It was a wee thing and curious about my bright screen, but I need a bit more warning before entertaining such visitors.

The CombiCamp looks really interesting!

Moving is total misery. After the last move, I said I would not do it again. Mr. theBRKP has been making noises about moving after kiddo is launched into adulthood. This is still some years away, and while I am not opposed to the notion, I am adamantly opposed to doing any of the organization, sorting, packing, lifting, loading, unloading and rearranging that comes with moving house and will happily pay large sums of money to offload such responsibility onto others and just leave what I don’t want on the front lawn for the neighbors to take.

That CombiCamp looks very much like a pop-up trailer that tried to kill me when I was a kid… I was tasked with holding up a broken door from the inside while my brother lowered the top with the rusted crank on the outside. The crank broke (of course), and I (as well as everyone else outside, I’m sure) had a brief “oh shit” moment before flattening myself to the floor while the top came crashing down. I’ve never been back inside a pop-up trailer since then…

When my dad retired and moved across the country (selling the sizeable house), he had a house-cooling party: picked a day and invited friends and family and neighbours to come by and take what they wanted. It helped the move immensely.

I've lost my voice.
Luckily I don't have to do any talking.

When I was 16, I also had laryngitis. As I was losing my voice, I did a lot of singing, loving my new gravelly deep hoarse voice. Which meant that I completely lost it and couldn't speak at all, just in time for my flight from SA to USA via the UK. First time flying alone and 16 years old.

I kept having to whisper-shout my questions about where I was supposed to be in the airport. Rather stressful.

So I'm restraining myself and not doing any singing.

I did (and called it) the exact same thing when I moved across the country myself. I went around the party with a notepad, taking down everybody’s dibs, and making pickup arrangements. Everything just evaporated over the following week.

Frustrating, it further your already injured voice and they still can't hear you! When I'm in a situation involving people have talk to people who can't hear me, my equipment includes a notebook and a felt tip marker. The thickness of the letters makes the words visible at longer distances than words written with pen, useful if you're social distancing.

A paint program on a tablet works also.

We're thinking of moving to a bigger house - but I'm still trying to pare down our belongings as much as possible. Thank you to the neighbours who come and remove things from our doorstep after I list stuff on our local buy-nothing site. I could make money selling it (maybe) but it wouldn't be worth the time and hassle.

My condolences about Liz Truss. It's something else to add to my working hypothesis that the most powerful female politicians have had to be hard-edged and conservative, at least along some axis, in order to succeed. Here's hoping that will change in the new generation.

There's a woman wailing outside my building. The thing is, she's always wailing, unless she's yelling instead. It's hard to understand her. She's in this area a lot, walking and shouting. Technically, there are services right on these blocks that could help her or get her help, but there must be some reason that they don't work for her. I wish I knew what to do.

Currently playing Genshin Impact. It's free to play. You can spend money on it, but so far the only thing I know you can buy with real money are "genesis crystals," which are good for what now? I understand that it's a gacha game, so I should be spending money, but thus far I haven't seen any reason to. (That said, I've only completed the game's "prologue" section, so what do I know?) It's a very handsome-looking game, so I wouldn't mind throwing a few dollars at it. But I'd like to know what I'm buying.

signal, if you don't mind, do you have any insights on specific reasons it was rejected? All the coverage I've seen just explains how progressive it was, as if that was a clear reason for rejection, but given the support there had been for this project and for electing a progressive administration, I'm left wondering if there were mostly objections about specific parts of it while other parts had broad support.

Had there been a lot of attempts at outreach and consensus-building in the last year to try to expand support for the approach the new constitution was taking, or was it more of a "here, we finished it, now vote on it" thing?

A few days ago after an hour of trawling I finally found a place that delivers to me using in-house delivery and not DoorDash/EatStreet/Grub Hub/etc. The two places that used to do so now only offer that service at sporadic times that I can never seem to catch. I was desperate for delivery but unwilling to compromise my ethics or my frustration tolerance level. I must have Googled upwards of 25 restaurants promising delivery only to find it was all through apps such as above.

Finally found a lovely little local Chinese place with their own delivery service and the food was AMAZING. The portions were huge and just this morning I finished an appetizer that gave me four whole meals. I still have an entire entree I haven’t touched. So, they have my undying devotion now.

As a flipside to the above housecooling tale, maybe five years after my dad moved away, my mom moved from a sprawling Victorian house to a compact one-bedroom place. Again there was a lot of downsizing. (No connection between their status as exes and the relocations — they divorced in the seventies.) She cast about for takers for furniture, art, etc.

She called me one day a couple of months before her move. “Do you want a table lamp?” I had recently moved in with my then-sweetie, now-wife.

“Maybe. Which one are you looking to get rid of?”

“Well, I have nineteen.”

will happily pay large sums of money to offload such responsibility onto others and just leave what I don’t want on the front lawn for the neighbors to take

We just moved out of a 3/4br house (after 10 years) into one small storage unit and one cargo van. All told we spent the proceeds of the sale of a used car on junk haulers and dumpsters, plus we sold a few valuable things, gave away some specialized stuff on Reddit (kudos to the two people who came and got all my fish and didn't murder me), and filled our yard multiple times with stuff for our Buy Nothing group (who I also invited to come in my house and take what they wanted from my pantry). We had a housecooling open house one weekend, and it was nice to see the friends who came by, but most of them didn't want our shit and at best took a lamp or casserole dish.

It's not the stuff, it's the little nuggets of important or at least keepable stuff buried in all the junk. For the most part, we couldn't just point and say "yeah, just empty that room", we had to go through it all first and ultimately bagged up what had been sorted to differentiate from what hadn't or what was being kept.

We should have started months before we moved out, but we didn't. We should have declared decluttering holidays quarterly every year, but we didn't. My husband has finally convinced me to sit down and read (and then celebrate the holidays of) Discardia.

In the end, on the last day - a week after our intended deadline - after we had packed up our desks as the last absolutely critical things that needed to go in the van, we were just physically incapable of moving anymore and we had to get on the road. We left a key for the junk haulers and a cleaning service, and walked away from every "maybe" item left in the house, the stuff I had planned to neatly box up for the van. Most of my kitchen, I just had to say fuck it and leave it.

It's been a full week since we got to our first short-term rental and we're still going to bed around 9pm and taking 1-2 naps to get through our workdays. I hope I have learned my lesson, I really really do. We're looking at maybe two years of road minimalism and (barring various weather-related clothing and gear) I can probably be throwing away things that are going unused every time we pack up to move again.

The good news is that STR #1 is small but well laid-out, we have worked around some bandwidth challenges, and we are having a good time when we're not asleep or working. A lot of California is hunkering down for a nasty heat wave starting right now, and at least this little place had a pretty new mini-split AC so we should be okay.

So, no one's mentioned the mingle game, but I like to make up conversations and scenes between these characters. Like one later dms another one: "We chatted very briefly at the party last night (about 2D vs 3D; do you remember?). You: So many voluptuous curves! So very many beautiful eyes, and two lovely legs. So tall and regal! Me: short and long; quite obround and boring; only one eye; very many legs. No way the two of us could ever vibe, right? But I felt so many things when we were (so fleetingly!) together. If you'd ever like to get a coffee — or maybe the world's best Cuban sandwich? (I know a place!) — please ping me. Any time."

Both came down to the wire as well, so it seems well balanced thus far. Lots of options for customizing sessions to keep things fresh. A++, do recommend.

When I came to this apartment 15 years ago I moved in with basically nothing, so I made a looooong list of everything I was going to need. After I covered the essentials, I started to get creative. It became a sort of wish-list, stuff I had no hope of getting anytime soon. I had a lot of debts and couldn't afford much. I put the list away.

That list showed up last month at the bottom of a drawer. Looking it over I realized, I have all this stuff! Without even thinking about it I've been ticking off this list for 15 years. It's like getting a Quest Complete! notification at the endgame of an RPG, when you totally forgot about that quest you started at the beginning.

Nineteen years later: Mr B passed away from cancer after our divorce; it's just me and my two kids; we now have five cats - the last original cat passed just three years ago.

The idea of moving again frightens and elates me at the same time. I have finally found a partner who GETS me; and we are talking seriously about moving in together in the fairly near future. As we (he more so) are approaching retirement age, there's just so many questions and decisions to be made!! Where do we start?? Where do we go?

Still job hunting.

My wedding anniversary is on Wednesday and my wife gave me my anniversary present early: a Cricut Joy with a kit of stuff. I’ve done some tests and next thing I’m going to make with it is my anniversary card to her.

Started progesterone as part of transition last week. Also restarted blogging, but I need to do it more often. The problem I run into is not wanting to do anything really creative with someone I know around me, because my mind freezes up. Since my wife works from home and I have no job, this is… problematic at times, as I’m sure you can believe.

I’m restarting my fitness routine, so eating less, and working out with resistance bands and doing this sword-fitness routine I found online to work on the muscle mass I’m losing through transition. Still wouldn’t stop. I’m actually more dexterous now, which may be because my reactions are for the body I feel comfortable in.

I finished moving into a new place two weeks ago. It's only across town, but the move also involves dissolving a shared household of more than 10 years. I'm pretty sure it's good for everyone, but it's also really awkward and full of tiny little details. There's still a lot of stuff to deal with in every dimension. The new place is livable, which means the challenge now is to avoid putting off dealing with all the rest of the small things.

Last week was the first time I've left North America in three years. I spent a week in Leiden for work. I wasn't crazy about standing shoulder to shoulder with one hundred unmasked people on crowded train cars. (I'm still testing negative, to my surprise.) But, everything else about it was great fun. I had cataract surgery in my worse eye yesterday, and had the follow-up exam today.

Good news: the procedure went well, I'm healing well, and I'm 20/20 in that eye for the first time in years.
Bad news: my need for reading glasses doubled (from +1.25 to +2.50, although luckily the +1.25 glasses I already had seem good enough for computer use at my standard font size and distance).
Weird news: I had thought the cataract in my right eye wasn't objectively that bad, but it turns out it was only subjectively less bad than the one in my left eye. I didn't know how yellowed everything was until my left eye stopped being yellow yesterday.

I have enough contacts left to get me through the three weeks until I have surgery in the other eye, but it's going to be a weird three weeks. For multiple reasons my contact prescription wasn't as good as my glasses prescription, but having one good eye and one sorta-bad eye (with a contact) seems like maybe a less bad choice than wearing glasses with one lens popped out. I'll find out tonight when I have to take that contact lens out!

I did get in contact with the tap teacher (she sounds lovely) and emailed the studio about how to pay for drop-in classes (haven't heard back). I may go shopping for tap shoes on Saturday.

I have officially quit my previous volunteer job, which I haven't been to since pre-pandemic. I can't really do it and theater at the same time. I didn't want to Officially Quit, but they asked and it got forced upon me that I must give an answer, dammit. I'm sad. I wish there was a reasonable way for me to keep my hand in both, and this especially feels ironic since I probably won't be doing any shows in 2023 (at least not at this theater for awhile since I don't like the next 3 shows coming up, nor do they have parts for me). The fourth show on the docket is Sweeney Todd, which everyone is crazy about, I haven't seen, but strongly suspect I would not love because I am more of a Buffy/Supernatural horror person, not a HORROR person :( I may look for shows elsewhere though, if my old theater comes back again circa winter/spring. Plus auditioning at Theater I Probably Won't Get Into, Hence The Tap Thing.

I am getting my BA5 booster tomorrow. That is also the opening of my next show. (I don't react to shots, so no concern on that.) As usual these days, I'm the only one who wears a mask in the entire theater and I'm feeling tired of being The One Freak Wearing A Mask AGAIN in a show. I stopped wearing it during Evita so I could stop feeling like that, then of course people got it and I went back to mask wearing for the last show since I knew someone was still testing positive despite 10 days. Now I have this issue coming up yet again, sigh. I pretty much have to decide in a few hours for pictures--I told them I wasn't planning on removing it and they're fine with that and would never harass me about it, but getting the booster is literally as good as I can possibly get for mask-free safety now so it may be worth considering. Ugh. I am a big fan of paranoia and not letting my guard down or else I jinx myself, but I just feel so damn weird being The One Freak onstage about it, too :(

Hello fellow tapper. I started to take classes again last fall. We start up again next week. I hope these stupid CDA classes aren't on the same day as my dance class.

You do you jenfullmoon.

My child, (current pronouns unclear), was in a show at her University last year. They were the only person wearing a mask onstage. But their character was a physicist, so it kind of made sense, given the times.

I was very proud of the stance.

I didn't wear one for photos last night and I am boosted as of this morning. We'll see how it goes, I suppose. I note that this is a show about being a weirdo (and visually I am on Team Normal People Shaming The Weirdos, which is certainly new for MY life) and I just hit my limit on "She doesn't quite fit in," I guess.

I will note that Belle actually came up to me at intermission and said, "You're BEAUTIFUL." Which is literally something that has never, ever been said to me before. Go figure.
