They always say music made with drum machines is soulless, but they never warn you that it’s because they’ll literally steal your soul.

Are they also simulating the bad transistors that give the 808 its unique sound? Roland used rejected 2SC828-R transistors and "When the parts ran out, production ended as newer processes didn’t produce the same superbly flawed parts".

(This is sort of reminds me of when LANL had trouble recreating FOGBANK due to a previously unidentified specific impurity that was crucial to the output. Newer feed materials were more pure and modern cleaning processes also removed the impurity from the production line. Details are in Nuclear Weapons Journal, 2009 vol 2)

I used to own a TR-505 and it always puzzled me why Roland will not acknowledge it in any of their drum machine history. But looking back it was a cheap budget machine and it kind of makes sense. You can't mistake the flimsy tom-tom and timbale samples and I can still hear it in a few 80s songs (Vince Clarke / Erasure used it a lot)

But I thought it was pretty nifty. My college roommate figured out it could be a cheap MIDI sequencer and loved working with it.

Really knew what drum machines were, but this is my first “hands-on” experience. I am not being even a little bit facetious when I say this, I now understand where so much of the music I love comes from.

And now I kinda want a drum machine.

This warms my heart. Thanks for posting!
