Small chinese restaurant in Japan, Small Udon restaurant in Japan and there's a whole channel of these wholesome, calming and hunger-inducing videos. Minimal dialogue, lots of technique and a peek into the everyday life of Japan. (Similar previously: Walking through Tokyo in 4k

For some similar warm and quirky entertainment, check out the 2 Midnight Diner series on Netflix.

We have eaten Tokyo Stories up and would love more. There's also Samurai Gourmet which is pretty funny.

I want to find these calming but I don't. So many quick cuts! Such shaky camera work! It's the opposite of calming.

The Solitary Gourmet (Kodoku no Gourmet) is the king of these shows, having run for more than 100 episodes. A quiet businessman walks around a neighborhood, drops in at a random restaurant and... just eats. No plot, no drama, just ordering and consuming food with an inner monologue focused on getting maximum enjoyment from the meal. It might sound boring but it's my favorite TV show of all time. Unfortunately it's not as legally streamable as Midnight Diner or Samurai Gourmet but it is easy to find all the episodes subtitled online.

Looks interesting but the link in the article that leads to the videos starts with asking me to download a browser plug-in. No thanks.

Sorry, it looks like the link that the AVClub pointed to years ago is now being domain-squatted... it's not too hard to find elsewhere on the Internet but obviously use caution. I really wish Netflix would just air it worldwide.

These udon/soba videos kept me somewhat sane during the height of the pandemic. I'd watch them, as well as the Yummyboy videos of Korean street food.

That is just the intro section giving you a taste of what they are going to show. After that they usually start with an exterior shot of the restaurant early in the morning, and then go from there. You get a nice view of all the prep work that goes on before the customers arrive, and then preparation of various orders through the day.

I've been watching these videos muself for the last few weeks. It's a great way to wind down. No drama. No plot. Just people doing something cool.

Last night I watched one where the guy made his soup broth with five kinds of Bonito flakes (dried, fermented, shredded fish). Seemed a bit finicky to me, but he seemed happy and proud of his work.

Wow, so hungry now. And 2nding the sentiment that the lunch box would be a steal at twice the price.
