Jessica Mitrani’s stylish short tells the true story of the sedentary Catalan Countess of Guell, Palomba Matas Mujika de Pumeral y Santiago, who at the age of eighteen famously reclined on a chaise lounge refusing to ever stand again. Narrated by Rossy de Palma, the Spanish star of "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" — who is known for her own dark and unorthodox beauty — the film recounts what would happen if the countess kept to her word, and is soundtracked by a sleek cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I’ll be Your Mirror”.”

On a chaise longue you say? And this is really making wonder where this all originated.

I liked this - and by way of a follow up, thought people might like this particular guide to chaise lounges and their variants over the years - important to know your Récamier from your Méridienne and your Fainting Couch from your Turkish Fainting Couch.

A shout out also to Salonnière Juliette Récamier who spent enough time looking beautiful on a chaise longue to give her name to the above mentioned variety - and to turn down a marriage offer from a prince.

Just to be clear, this is a person that actually existed? I tried to google it and all I can find were references to the film itself. (Which included this Metafilter entry on the first page, so hey! Good search engine placement!)

That Wet Leg music is excellent! I didn't know them! Also, I never imagined there were so many different types of that specific type of furniture!

As for being a real person, when I was this for the first time I thought she could be real – but over the years, I've accepted the fact that she might be just a character for that short film. Nonetheless, if she existed her story would be fantastic!
